• Processor:
o The lowest processor for this laptop is the i5-430M, however it is no longer a configurable option.
o The DV6T se comes standard with a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz. Benchmark Here
o The highest processor available is the Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-840QM (Quad Core) processor (1.86GHz, 8MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.2 GHz. Benchmark Here
o As of now there is much speculation regarding the i5-450M and the i5-520M/i5-540M processors in regards to which is fastest. It would appear that the i5-450M is going to suffice for users who do not need a quad core processor for running many applications or running intensive hyper-threading applications. “540m has higher clock speed so it's faster but 450m has a higher DMI which is the bus speed of processor sort of like the width of a highway it allows more data to be transferred” (*MicGoogle*) Here is some more debate on the topic. Edit: There have been more benchmarks submitted to Passmark which now show the 450M to be slightly faster than the 540M. In my opinion, if you are sticking with Dual core on this machine, just get the 450M.
The following quote is taken from the Acer TimelineX 3820TG forum.
o I do not have sufficient knowledge to comment on the i7 Quad Core Processors. (Feel free to supply info)
• RAM:
o Currently there is a free upgrade to 6gb DDR3 RAM. This should suffice the majority of users as 4gb is standard in the industry and is rarely a restriction on system performance. Notably, Windows 7 utilizes extra RAM as a cache and will improve boot/loading times. So the 6gb upgrade will benefit all users to some degree.
o If you want to upgrade to the maximum capacity of 8gb, then you should know what you are using it for and have a better knowledge than myself… or you just have more money than sense![]()
• Graphics:
The standard GPU is the 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5470 switchable graphics. Here are the specs from Notebookcheck.
o 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [for i5 processors], not switchable for i7 quad core processors. Here are the specs on the graphics card from notebookcheck.
o Multiple users have used BFBC2 at medium/high settings as a benchmark and have gotten results of 43-45 average fps.
oo “The ATI HD 5650 comes clocked at 550/800 (I'm not positive on the 800, but I'm pretty sure), and most people say that they overclocked it to 650/1000, and anywhere beyond that causes malfunctions.
Btw, the overclocking to 650/1000 is supposed to give around 5 fps increase for games like BFBC2”(*MethodtotheMadness*)

As far as gaming goes the 5650 and quad core rip through everything that I play with ease. Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Dragon Age, and Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 all play fluently on high settings. Even with the integrated 4250 enabled I can play every one of those games on lower settings with around 30 FPS. The 4250

• Screen:
o Currently the only screen available for the DV6T se is the 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768).
o There have been mixed reviews on the screen regarding viewing angles and overall picture quality. Some users find it to be acceptable, while others find it lackluster compared to 1080p or the resolution of the optional Envy14 HD+ HP Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900). Some users have praised the screen in regards to the low resolution, due to increased performance in gaming.
o There is also a Touchscreen option for $150 added cost. The majority of users have found this feature to be responsive, fun, of great shock value, yet rarely practical. Due to this machine’s incapability to turn the screen 180 degrees and folded into a tablet form, the touchscreen is only practical for casual web browsing and entertainment applications. (Still waiting for more info on the possibility of taking notes {mathematical graphs} with the touchscreen. The touchscreen also makes the screen edge to edge and does not have a bezel like the standard screen.
o In regards to screen smudging/scratching This Screen Protector vendor has received some positive feedback from some NBR users.
The 15.6" protector is too small for the dv6t se w/Touchscreen, (unsure about w/o Touchscreen) I will update when I find the appropriate size.
• Hardrive:
o General consensus on the optional SSD is: “If you have the extra money and want faster load times while being willing to sacrifice large memory, do it!”
o The 160gb SSD (confirmed to be Intel) will set you back an additional $270, and 340gb of memory. In return you get the comfort of knowing that your drive will not make any noise, should run cooler (not by a large margin), will shorten boot and loading times (amount varies), and you’ll know you have the latest in hardrive technology.
• Battery:
o Users have reported an average of 3-5 hours while doing light web-surfing at 20%-50% brightness with the standard 6-cell. Also the 9-cell battery has been said to average around 5-7 hours with light use.
o Personally, I like the option of getting the standard 6-cell battery and the 9-cell for an additional $60. It’s a fact that your battery will wear out with use. Most users will find a noticeable decline in longevity within a year. With the cost of a new battery being around $100, it is worth getting a higher capacity battery for a considerably less amount. And if you go on a long trip you can take both, fully charged, and not have to lose power when Jack and Rose finally get it on in Titanic.

• Keyboard:
o Get the backlight keyboard option… kthxbai!
o The Quicklaunch buttons on the left side of the keyboard have generated some complaints, however there has been some helpful info given to improve their functionality. There are multiple recommendations for making these buttons launch apps you’ll actually use and you can find that info here. I have seen quite a few posts referencing Event Ghost as a good way to do this.
o The keyboard has had little mention of any “flex” issues.
o Turn turn on the backlight there is a button in the top right corner of the keyboard that has 3 squares and a little light coming from them.. just click that.

Follow those instructions with a little change for our dv6tse model (it was originally intended for envy 14 users)
First to get to the Sound setting go to control panel and for view select large icons so you can see the Sound icon. When he mentions tone control tab go to Advanced tab in dv6tse model and click on 24 bit sound and keep on going with the directions. If anyone needs help let me know but these changes have a dramatic effect on the sound produced from dv6tse... i currently am in love with this. If you follow my directions, you will have better speakers than the current Envy 14.. i did the changes on mines and the sound is gushing forth and roaring, speakers are speakers its how you adjust them, hp wouldn't make speakers that can't make sound lol. The thing is Envy 14's beats is only a software change and no physical speaker change.. so the laptops have same speaker to my understanding or rather from my experience.

You can do the same in windows media player etc., right click when in "Now playing" mode and go to the graphic equalizer and set it to low on all the bars and max loud on the keyboard it should balance it out while producing a very large noise output..
So just play around but the tweaks might be a different for each genre..”(*MicGoogle*)
Ok next touchpad issues…
You can easily access synaptics panel by clicking on show hidden icons in the system tray (bottom right corner) and clicking on synaptics then go to Wheel tab and set vertical scrolling to "1" line at a time default is 3 lines that's why its not smooth but if you use 2 fingers it has alot of advantages and you can remove 1.. whatever its easier to get used to..” Some users have said they had to install the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver then do what was mentioned above.
A guide: Go to the system tray in the bottom-right of the screen (you may have to press the little arrow) and select Synaptics Pointing Device>Go to device settings>Select the touchpad and click settings>Set your preferences from there.
Also see the next two posts in the thread for further instruction on tweaking the touchpad.

Unboxing
o Upon unboxing your DV6TSE you should take a good look over the laptop noticing if there are any scratches, cracks, or gouges on the exterior. Some owners have reported that the bottom cover for the Hardrive and/or RAM is not fully secured and tabs stick out from it. Simply re-screw the cover on with the tabs placed where they belong.
As far as defective things - some users have reported that their touchpad isn't installed correctly. See Touchpad Section
The flimsy/click-when-pushed-when-closed DVD/Blu-Ray drive isn't an issue, just a slight flaw in build quality.

• Fresh Install/Clean Startup
o This is the guide for doing a fresh install. If you would like to just clean up your startup processes, go to the Windows search, type in “msconfig”, hit enter and then go to the startup tab. From there you can choose which programs startup when your computer boots.
• Updating Drivers:
o Here is a link to all current drivers.
o Here<a/> is a guide to updating your Graphics Drivers.
o HP provides driver updates as well, here is the link to their driver support site.
o Also some good updates to run on a regular basis are: Windows Update, HP Update, and HP Support Assistant(tune up). All of these are existing programs on new machines.
•Flashing Bios (This should only be considered by advanced computer users, as doing this could cause your machine to malfunction or even become a very nice looking paperweight.) :
o HP has BIOS updates on their site, be sure that your product number is the same as provided in this Link before proceeding. If your Product number does not match, click HP technical support, enter your product number, and go from there.
o I am still looking into customizing BIOS, input is welcome.
A big thank you to everyone who posts in the dv6tse forums and make this guide possible!!!

I was almost at the point of returning this laptop because of the touchpad, but I saw
What I did is:
Control Panel>Mouse>Set wheel to 1 line at a time.
Control Panel>Mouse>Device Settings>Settings...>Scrolling and turn everything off. Control Panel>Mouse>Device Settings>Settings...>Buttons and turn those off too.
Control Panel>Mouse>Device Settings>Settings...>Sensitivity>Palm Check and set it all the way to the right.
Control Panel>Mouse>Device Settings>Settings...>Sensitivity>Touch Sensitivity and set it all the way to the left.
Apply these and then download and run the above "Two Finger Scroll." It'll be the hand in the system tray. Double tap it and in General set it to start with Windows.
Next, go to Tapping. Don't assign left click to anything because it's still single tap from Control Panel>Mouse. What you have to do is figure out how you want to tap out your right clicks. I have one+one, which means you tap and hold with one finger and then tap a second finger to right click.
Two fingers is tapping two fingers simultaneously, but I had a hard time getting that to not register as a left click.
Two+one is tapping and holding with two and then tapping a third finger.
Three is tapping three fingers.
Credit goes to FatPigs for finding this life-saving program. God bless the internet. -
To add to the Touchpad section:
Users may also be interested in installing Two Finger Scroll and Touch Freeze (both available on Google code). The former allows for setting different gestures, making it possible to do a right click/middle click by a different combination of fingers. The latter "disables the touchpad while you are typing text" to reduce palm and trackpad interference.
This was lifted from the Envy 14 trackpad discussion. Since they both use the same trackpad most of the changes that are specified should work on either system:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/502589-e14-trackpad-discussion-only.html
UPDATE: You can now enable tap zones by going to device manager -> mice/other pointing device -> Synaptics -> driver -> update driver -> find the latest driver number and select the first one. This will create 4 boxes on the corner that you can map to special functions. In my case, I mapped the bottom left and right to Backwards and Forwards, respectively. The top left and right I mapped to middle click and right click. Integrates itself much better than some of Two Finger Scroll's glitchy finger combos.
UPDATE2: Enabling tap zones via driver number 1 will completely kill deadzones. That is if you put one finger on the left/right clicker and try to move with your finger anywhere it will read it as a gesture instead.
^ thanks, but I shouldn't take all the credit since I stole it from the other thread LOL
oh and review video number 3 isn't linked correctly. -

When I got mine, I had the lowest Intel® Core™ i5 configuration which is the Core ™ i5-430m and an ATI Radeon™ 4750. I think you should include this as the lowest base configuration, too.
Thanks! -
Thanks Method, I look forward to adding your video.
Toink, Are you sure your GPU is a 4750? even your signature says 5470, and the 4750 is a desktop gpu. Also, do you know where all the HP dv6t se owners images are? I know someone posted a few like the one in your sig. I would like to add those here for myself, as well as new owners. -
Another member posted this video review from youtube. Hands on review from SlashGear. Some pics posted by another owner.
I also uploaded the owner's manual HERE. -
Another suggestion....how about a list of things to check when first receiving the laptop (i.e. the things that have been defective when other NBR users have received their systems)?
-
How about before they get it?
This post targets those obsessing on when the computer will ship, when it arrives, and how long it will take.
Jumpseat finder will help you track FedEx flights before they happen. Oddly enough, Jumpseat Finder works fantastically for future flights but any recent flights (ie today) will not show up. Another problem with Jumpseat is that the flight tracking sometimes makes no sense. For all West Coast customers, the flight will first go through Anchorage for customs checking then proceed towards Oakland, not Memphis. Basically, track down the route that makes sense and tell Jumpseat where to go every step of the way.
For recent flights (as in a couple of hours away) FlightStats will give you actual flight data and when it is expected to arrive. However, FlightStats is pretty bad at updating on any close flights. So don't expect to find tracking data unless your flight is an hour away.

FlightAware is the best current day app. You can pull up the complete airline schedule for any airport. For kicks pull up KMEM anytime from 11pm-2am local time...at times FEDEX lands 3-4 planes within a MINUTE.
Basic things to check include scrapes/gouges/scratches along the exterior/interior. Also check the Device Manager to make sure you've got what you've ordered/paid for.
While you are waiting for your laptop to arrive it wouldn't hurt to Google "windows 7 tutorial" if you are new to Windows 7. There are a ton of changes from previous versions. -
Just one quick question concerning the backup. Is using the Windows 7 image backup feature a good way for it?
-
Check to see if the underside cover is seated properly. Mine had the small tabs sticking out, so I had to unscrew it and then put it back in the right way. Nothing was broken, just looks like someone got a little sloppy.

New coupon information (can be found on DV6TSE owner's thread). Overall, there is a $100 OFF coupon for systems $1199+. In addition, there is an automatic notebook rebate for $170 and a laptop rebate for $20, totaling $190 in instant rebates. However, you are still better off using the academic discount in addition to these "automatic discounts."

You should put out a note about the wireless card installed.
The dv6t 3000 are issued with Intel Wireless Link 1000 BGN 1x2 and not dual band card are issued on previous generations of the dv6.
It only supports 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n (Draft 2.0) only at the 2.4Ghz spectrum. There are no support for 802.11a, 802.11n (Final) or the 5Ghz spectrum.
Also, HP whitelist a very small set of wireless cards that work on the dv6. -
This thread needs someone to post whats the 3dmark06 score with overclocked hd5650.

This is on page 3. Someone needs to sticky this.
In other related news, you should add some average temperatures on this machine.
My temps:
30-40C idle and light web browsing along with office work.
90C on CPU and 70C on GPU completely 100% maxed out for both. -
I did a battery test. From a fully charged 6-cell battery; full bright, WiFi and BT on; backlit keyboard on; watching video and browsing at the same time via wifi; listening via a BT Philips Headset. The battery lasted 3hrs and 45mins. before it warned me to plugged it to charhe at 8% battery life... I'm pleased so far.
This is the first time I drained the battery. I exect it to 'condition' itself after 2 re-charged-discharge-cycles.... -
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but around what time of day does HP normally give products to HP for shipping? Does anyone know? I'm asking here because I think that this should be included so that people don't go crazy refreshing every ten minutes like me.

a few hours, if burning on 5 dvds -
I am debating between this and the DV7 SE or the DV6 SE. And this question will make up my mind.
I would get the following specs
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 56G50 Graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
Intel Wireless-N Card
Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
So here the question is there room to put in another Hard drive?????
This is really important. Thankz ! -

By the way, you should update to the July 2010 revision of the dv6 service manual which was recently posted by HP, couple of weeks ago.

I found out in another thread that the 6200 and 6300 are whitelisted. But in the DV6t SE manual. There was a replacement part for intel 6250 + WiMax wireless card. This card supports 5 Ghz N frequencies, thus might support dual band?-just a theory though
-
The theory is if wont spit out an 104 error, then it will support dual band.
Can you give me the thread for the 6300 (not) working on the dv6 3rd gen??
You could purchase the 6250 here on NBR Marketplace , babyhemi
Here the Thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/com...centrino-advanced-n-wimax-6250-cards-new.html
Just pm if he has still have some or could do special order.
My friend brought a 6200 and a 6300 from him for a dv6 quad 2nd gen, a few weeks ago. They are working really really well. -
My friend's notebook uses a 6300, and after opening it up i found out that the 6300 card uses 3 antennas, while the HP dv6 usually only has two antenna cables.
Does your friend's dv6 quad 2nd gen support the 6300? did he just attach only two antenna cables and left the third port free?
And sorry, seems that I can't find the other thread anymore. -
Yes, He has 2 antennas, left out the 3rd one (The third one was the one that enabled the 450mbit, but he managed to achieve 1.8x higher throughput than his original 5100? based on speedtest; we have access to a very fast pipe, and no, there was no mention the dv6t quad 2nd gen that it was support but it happened to work.
-
I want to pull the trigger on a Intel 6300. I'm just not sure if this BIOS will accept it. I really, really want the 5ghz channel and better throughput. I have a NAS array and the inference with surrounding networks and crappy throughput is killing me.
