I'm hearing conflicting stories regarding the power consumption of the 5400 vs. 7200 rpm HDD. I ordered my laptop with the 5400 HDD to prolong my battery life. Maybe that was an error? If anyone out there can clear this up, it might help others who are in the process of speccing out their rig.
Obviously, this primarily applies to those of us who won't be subbing in an SSD immediately. Thanks!
Oh, btw, this was intended for the Pavillion forums. ty.

I did a little google-ing because I wanted to know myself. Google 5400 vs 7200 laptop
One website
5400 rpms vs. 7200 rpms - Hard-Disks - Storage
If it were me, I would go with the 7200 because it is faster. What kind of processor and amount of ram does it have? If it is a high end processor, you really don't want to bottleneck.
Hope this helps. -
i have the 7200 one and heard about this after i bought it. At first i thought it might affect me but after having used it for a while my battery gets pretty decent mileage;]
i have a 6 cell and the 9 cell
6 cell lasts me around 4 hours and the 9 cell around 7, sometimes even more! -
Ordering a 5400 instead of a 7200 to save battery is pretty pointless.
-
Think of the boot time it will save you. That uses battery. Also, you could think of the race to idle dilemma. That hard drive will read/write and drop back to a less power using state faster than a 5400 rpm will. So depending how much faster it reads and writes compared to the increased powe consumption, it could actually save battery. In theory.
-
Are you able to change it?
-
Just buy this hard drive because reordering is a pain, will take long, and you might lose your coupon.

i have the 7200...i prefer the extra performance over the bit more battery life, honestly. anyway, if anything kills my battery quickly, its my tendency to leave the brightness on high unless i absolutely NEED to conserve the power...

the 7200 rpm on my dv6 is very noticeably faster than an old 5400 rpm I have (it's on 1.5 GB SATA though)
P.S. - Why are boot times still so crappy on the dv6 -

I very much appreciate everyone's input. In reading all of these posts, and spending a lot of time independently researching this on the interwebs, I can't come to a conclusion.
There are so many different possibilities on not just power consumption, but read write speed, reliability. None of these can really be answered without knowing the model number of the drive. It's like arguing about whether or not green cars or a blue cars faster. What type of cars are they?
I've started a new thread where those who would like to contribute part info and model numbers can share that info. Hopefully this helps. -
A lot of the extra time is probably stuff unique to this laptop - i.e., fingerprint reader driver.
