I wouldn't mess with that stuff. If you go into the BIOS there's an option to turn fan always on to 'off'. That's what I've done and it has been working perfectly.

Yeah the fan always on is more of a "feature" than a problem.

Don't turn off the fan in the BIOS. If you do and your temps reach high levels, your fan has to work OVERTIME, and I mean OVERTIME.... to get rid of all the heat. This means longer and louder noises.
I tried turning it off and found that after a while my fan was going ballistic, even after an hour of leaving the laptop on a glass table the fan was still going.
The always on feature is important if you want to prolong the life of your components. If you really want to cut back on fan noise, buy some Arctic Silver and squeeze some on the GPU and CPU, knocks the temp about 10 degrees celsius, keeps my GPU at max 50 and cpu at about 40, this will lessen the length of time your fan goes into overdrive; or you could always buy a cooling pad, etc... wouldn't be too portable then would it aye?
