I just finished installing Windows 7 on my new dv7-1285dx and while everything works just fine after a Windows update (audio/video/touchpad/sd card reader), when I run device manager there are three devices with no drivers and a small yellow exclamation mark on their icon. These three devices are all listed as "Base System Device" and when I tried searching for a driver update online it didn't find anything. I visited HP's drivers page for my model and I think I have everything listed there already working... It's just these three devices which I don't even know what they are.

P.S. In the original Vista install that came with the laptop there are no such errors in Device Manager. I already have my recovery discs if these might help in this situation.

If anybody had had this problem with any laptop of the same series please tell me what I can do...

Here my laptops full specs, you can find them here:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...=01&srccode=cii_5766179&cpncode=19-19734705-2 (that's the exact one I bought)

    Thanks for any help...

Base device is the Intel ICH9 Family SMBUS Controller.
This is the chipset driver available to download from HP.
However you cannot install this from the exe provided by HP.
To install you have to use:
device manager - Update driver software - browse for driver software

now extract the exe by renaming the file extension to rar or zip or 7z etc
    something that winrar can read.
    extract the contents to desktop.
    Once done select:

Let me pick from a list of device drivers - Now if it doesn't show anything select Have Disk and browse to the folder that you extracted; find an .inf file depending on your system I believe it matters (I don't really know...) either x64 or x86 should contain the corresponding .inf

Once found select and it should show up with Intel(R) ICH9 Family SMBus Controller - 2930 (It should also state that this is digitally signed; if it isn't and your running a 32-bit system it won't matter, but if your running a 64-bit system it won't let you install unless it is digitally signed).

    Install drivers and voila!
You should have at least 2 of the 3 unknown items fixed.
The 2nd one is the SDHC capability on the card reader I believe, enabling you to read SDHC cards (I didn't check the before and after I installed the driver), now you should have one more which I believe is the High Definition Audio maybe? try doing the same thing (if you do not have IDT audio installed already) with the drivers from the HP website.
I only had the IR receiver and Chipset problems with my installation, also my ACPI Battery wasn't working because I hadn't put it in once I isntalled it (running on AC) therefore I had to enable the battery and it installed itself.

    Hope that helps...
let me know if your having trouble.
    :)

Base System Device was the card reader in my case. Even if it works now try installing the driver from HP and those yellow icons should disappear.

One other thing that could appear as "Unknown Device" is HP ProtectSmart, make sure you get that too.
