My friend's DV7 laptop just got a problem today--the screen is blank when he turns it on. When he press the power button, he could hear the fans moving and then later hear the Windows startup sound. Windows has loaded to his desktop, but the screen is still blank throughout--blank being a very dark gray screen (LCD is lit), but nothing is showing up. We have tried with no luck:

    - Taking battery out and putting it back in. Restart.
    - Adjusting brightness to maximum.
    - Plugging to an external monitor. "No input device detected" error.

Any ideas? He just got this a year ago.

Fn-F4 will cycle between built-in screen, external, and both. That's probably not the problem but try it to be thorough.

Can you get into the BIOS? (F10 during boot?) If not, it's hardware... and for both internal and external to be gone suggests a video chip problem. Normally this is the point where I'd ask if you have a NVIDIA chip but they were supposed to have been fixed by the time the dv7 rolled out?
