I had a DV7.. I roasted the GPU (Video Card).. minus an extended warrenty.. so get a laptop cooler.. I now have an HDX18.. with a Zalman zm nc2000..

Save yourself the money of a new laptop and always use a cooler (the pros have let me know no matter what kind of laptop).. this cooler or another that works (one that does not blow air into the fan blowing the hot air out is always a nice plus) will save you $$$'s going forward..

Trust me I learned the expensive lesson enough for the both of us and many others as well.

    Be well, JW

you know, i haven't heard of any reports of GPU problems on the dv5, dv7, 4, 6, etc. models. obviously, they havent been around for THAT long, but you are one of the only failed GPU's i've heard of on here. i'm not worried about mine. i also have an extended warranty, but even so...

Clean out the heatsink with a can of compressed air. Careful, the fan doesn't necessarily like getting blasted like that. My dv4 had collected a surprising amount of dust.

Let me be clear.. I Loved that Laptop.. It worked great and no problems until the GPU got fired.. and it was user error minus an extended warrenty..

It was not the machines fault I did not use a cooler..

It was no the machines fault I used a Laptop in my Lap which blocks the ventalation completely..

It was not the Machines fault I did not buy an extended warrenty..

All of those things are my fault, not the machines or HP's and / or any other maybe my Grilfriend can be some how blamed.. Naaaaa

For the record I was very happy.. I went a differnet way for a bigger screen.. The part that people can tell you about going from a 17" screen to a 18.4" sceen is that it is bigger.. the aspect ratio going from 16:10 to 16:9 sound smaller to me.. but it is not and the difference is huge.. something to file away in the back of your head for the next time you upgrade..

I hope that I helped more than hurt this time.

    Be well, JW

Well my old DV5z had some heating problems i tried everything to keep it cool Notebook cooler, cleaning the vents every two months, and even undervolting. nothing works and less than a year i had to buy a new battery and even with the new battery i was only getting 1h and 30mins on power saver on battery life which pretty much sucks Hp really did made a crappy cooling system with these laptops i kept it on a table one day and it was hot to the touch even the keys and touchpad was too hot to touch it even my old DV6408nr didnt had heating problems before it died because of the faulty NVIDIA parts. Im suprised it still works now and also my family uses it as a family computer with the notebook cooler keeping it cool i cant travel with it because of the heat and also its my backup laptop in case something happens to my new Toshiba laptop which runs super cool even with gaming and get at least 3 hours of battery life and just what i need when i go back to school :D

It's not necessarily the cooling system, and i have yet to use a notebook cooler. It's mostly how you use the laptop...

I have both nVidia and ATi, and as you can see i have one of the faulty 8 series chips. I bought it off some dude for cheap, fixed the fan, and it has yet to die on me.

One thing i do is always take out the battery when i'm using the laptop on AC and i don't need it charged. The battery is the largest heat source in the notebook, and the one that benefits the most from running cooler. When i'm using the laptops on my bed, it doubles as a support for the left side of the laptop where the cooler is, so that the air vents aren't blocked. Works great really. :)

The easiest way to clean the fan is simply getting a can of compressed air and blowing it into the vents on the bottom of the laptop. As for the battery, there is a latch on the bottom which releases it. It's most likely the only one on your laptop and it's quite large so you can't miss it. :)

180F is HOT! And heat is a laptop killer over time (usually soon after warranty is up). I agree with comments about cleaning fan and cooling pad- best places to start.

IMO many HP laptops have an inferior heat-sink design, and also suffer from a poor installation of the heat-sink (poorly applied and/or inferior thermal grease). If the above steps don't solve your problem, and you feel up to it, you can dismantle it, remove the crappy thermal pads and apply Arctic Silver or similar quality thermal grease. I did this and got about and 8-10C (46-50F) decrease at max load. Just be sure to give the heat sink surfaces a good cleaning with alcohol pads or other solvent. This will also allow you to give the fan and interior a good cleaning.

The easy way to find out if it's worth taking the thing apart to replace the thermal paste (as you'll have to take EVERYTHING to pieces to get to the fan), is to hold the laptop on your lap while wearing shorts, so that it sits on the bare skin of the legs. Now run a CPU stress test. If your legs start feeling roasty, then the laptop's cooling system is fine. :p

On the other hand, if temperatures go out of check and the fan runs full speed but the body of the laptop is rather cool to the touch, then it's likely that the cooling isn't seated properly.

180F (82C) is a bit high, but if those are 100% load temps (hint: Flash video like youtube is going to load your CPU heavily) there's no need to worry. Those CPUs are built to take up to 95C all day. When you get over 90C, then it's time to worry.

I just recently got myself a dv7 laptop and am in the market for a cooler. This is the model i got. I am looking at getting the coolermaster notepal infinite, however I haven't been able to find any reviews of it being used on the 17.3" dv7. I found one comment from a site of someone saying that it didn't work very well all, but can't find any other comments on it. Anyone used this cooler on a dv7? Sublime313 I noticed that you have the coolermaster notepal infinite, what are your opinions on it?

    thanks

    remove remote control
I just notice that left side of my dv7 is cooler without remote control

remove battery when using AC adapter

replace HDD with SSD (don't use 7200 HDD they run very hot)

I would love to swap my HDD with an SSD how ever there is no way I can afford that, especially since i have two HDD's in my laptop. I will see what removing the battery and remote does to the temps.

    Thanks.
