    I had the harddrive go out in my DV7, so I took the opportunity to move to a solid-state drive and was forced to do a full fresh install of Windows-7 - now in device manager I have 4 unknown items, how can I find out what they are? These are the hardware IDs:

    Base System Device
    PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2382&SUBSYS_363C103C&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2383&SUBSYS_363C103C&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2384&SUBSYS_363C103C&REV_00

    Unknown Device
    ACPI\HPQ0004 *HPQ0004

    I have a backup of the swsetup directory on DVD from the old hardrive as well as downloaded all the recent drivers off of HP's website... I think I got everything install and it's been over a week and everything seems to work, but the unknown items are kind of irritating, if you know what I mean. :)

    TIA

    Well, I hate to answer my own question... but, for completeness in case anyone else looks for the information;

    Base System Device:
    PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2382&SUBSYS_363C103C&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2383&SUBSYS_363C103C&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2384&SUBSYS_363C103C&REV_00

    Is 3x a JMicron Card Reader

    ==

    Unknown Device:
    ACPI\HPQ0004

    Is HP's ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection (HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor)

    ** Do not install this if your notebook is not using a hard drive provided by HP, or if your notebook solely uses solid-state drives (SSDs).**

    Thanks for the heads-up, but I'm already aware of that thread - it's a great resource and I have certainly made use of it over the last week!

    Mort, you are the ideal poster here! I wish everyone could answer their own questions.

    How do you like the SSD? What have you noticed in terms of performance?

    Thanks for the compliment - i did a search before I posted, but in another 10 minutes of searching I was able to find the information I needed on HP's forum.

    The SSD is fast, fast, fast! Program load times are less than 1 second - you click a program and it loads in a blink of an eye, even Firefox.

    The only down side is the storage space you give up, I got a 160GB SSD (Intel brand) and that was the largest they had in stocked. A 3-day wait I could have had 250GB for about another $100 bucks, but I wanted to get my laptop back up and running ASAP.

    Even with everything loaded (win7, office, live, wintv, etc.) it's occupying about 18GB of space, even before with the old hard drive I was only using 40gb of the 450GB total space that it offered and that was after almost a year of use and a bunch of programs that I never used - that's a big plus for doing a clean install; I finally got rid of a lot of HP/Windows junk that I would never use.

    So, overall I love the SSD! And I can't ever imagine going back to a traditional spinning hard drive for a primary boot/program drive ever again.

    Thanks for the information. I thought people were just over-exaggerating in regards to these SSDs.

    Maybe, I can find one on Black Friday...
