    Hey guys,

I had to re-install Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit from scratch on my HP dv7-4290US.

I have everything up and running with the drivers provided HERE, except one thing. I am unable to control screen brightness.

There is no option to change brightness under Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound ---> Display, like there is on my HP dv7-6100.

I have drivers installed for the ATI Radeon 6570M graphics driver. The monitor is showing up as "Generic PnP Monitor", Hardware ID: LGD027A.

Drivers for ATI Radeon 6570M are: 8.882.2.2000
    HDMI Audio: 7.12.0.7702

I have also installed HP On-Screen Display, HP PowerManager, HP SoftwareFramework, and HP Support Assistant.

Furthermore, I am unable to install any of the HP MediaSmart programs or the HP MediaSmart SmartMenu. They won't open when clicking the .exe.

    Please help!

Go to Control Panel >> Hardware and Sound >> Power Options. There should be a slider near the bottom that will allow you to adjust the screen brightness. (You can also setup plans here that will automatically change the brightness levels.)

If the slider is not present, restart the computer and then check again to see if the slider is there.

    Hey jutinkw1,

I was hoping you'd see this thread as you've helped me in the past with my HP dv8t.

There is no slider bar at the bottom under Power Options, despite multiple reboots.

Any other ideas? This one has me stumped. I have everything else operational except for the brightness controls on the keyboard.

The screen brightness settings aren't showing up anywhere (under Control Panel ---> Hardware and Sound ---> Display or Power Options).

You may have to remove and re-install your graphics driver if the brightness options are still not showing up, unfortunately.

Give this a try and let me know if it solves the problem.

    Justin,

    I tried that too.

I installed the one under Graphics Drivers on the HP Support site I linked above.
The older version # was: 8.771.1.0

That still did not bring up the brightness controls.

I then installed the current 8.882.2.2000 driver.

Do you think trying to install the latest Reference Driver on top of the 8.882.2.2000 driver might fix the issue?

Otherwise, I'm up a creek with no paddle.

    Hey Justin,

I was finally able to get the brightness controls to work!

I tried updating to the latest ATI Reference driver.... that didn't work.

So, I uninstalled all of the ATI Graphics drivers and utilities, then uninstalled the driver from Device Manager. I also uninstalled the Generic PnP display driver. Then, I rebooted.

When Windows restarted, it attempted to find and install the ATI graphics driver with Windows Update. It did, version 8.771.1.0.

I rebooted once again and the brightness controls showed up and I am able to control them using the keyboard as well.

I tried updating to the newer ATI drivers and lost brightness controls again. Looks like I'm stuck on 8.771.1.0 with no ATI Catalyst control panel until further notice.
