Can I run the notebook closed and just have it hooked up to an external monitor?
Any drawbacks to this?

Yes you can.
No drawbacks only upsides since you will be using your LCD less.
I keep my dv2000 pavilion always closed and use the Quick dock or express card remote to turn it on. -
Some notebooks reports increased heat when used with monitor closed. Give it and quick test, if there are no significant temperature increase, you should be good.

i run my dv7t with a 24" LCD via HDMI.. all is golden.... works well thru VGA, too..heat levels? AOK
-
Yeah i meant not completely closed. I usually leave a 2-3inch gap to help with the heat dissipation.
I noticed a 2c increase on temps when its completely closed. -
I use the xb4 HP Dock and the laptop does get extremely hot (This wasn't the case with the xb3000 because of the grooves on the panel which helped to pass air through the fans, on the xb4 it's just one flat panel no grooves....
the temp climbs a max amount of 5 degrees Celsius so GPU temps max at 60 on full load for about an hour, CPU at 55-60.
Just make sure you fan is set to always on, don't turn it off or else it will heat up extremely then the fan will kick in for an hour just to get the temp down.
I use a 24" lcd monitor with my xb4 dock and everything is fine, just little issues like no visual during boot (can't access BIOS, etc) so I have to wait till the login screen. -

heat level on my dv7t w/monitor closed is a nonissue. i connect it to my 50" samsung plasma tv and watch hulu / surf the net. i think playing a game would increase the temp but im not doing anything that intense on my machine so it's fine.
DV7T Can it run closed w/external monitor?
