Is anyone else having problems with burn speeds? I try burning a CD/DVD and it only runs at .88X speed instead of 8X. It also causes my notebook to respond very slowly. I upgraded to 1.5GB of RAM but that doesnt seem to help either

I have only burned about a half dozen discs so far on my new HP, but I have had varied results as well. A typical disc for me starts around .88x like you said, but usually after it gets started it will ramp up to the 8x it's supposed to be burning at, or at least close to it. It sounds to me like your computer may be using PIO on the controller instead of DMA, which would certainly explain your computer acting sluggish while buring. Go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager. Click on the IDE Controllers and then Primary IDE Channel. Click the advanced settings tab and you will see how your computer is currently running. I believe that device 0 is your hard disk and device 1 is your CD/DVD burner. Make sure both drag-down boxes are set to "DMA when available" and see if that helps.
