This will be a very newbee question so bare with me please.

But am I understanding correctly that the 1st gen Core 2 Duo chip(Merom) will have the same socket and specs as the current Core Duo (Yonah). So I could buy a core duo laptop now (ex hp DV8000t) and upgrade to a Core 2 Duo chip later?

Or is swapping CPU's in a notebook not a DIY thing?

Thanks for the info guys :D

You would have to swap the processors yourself so yes its a DIY thing. And its not guranteed that the processor will work in your notebook unless HP releases a updated bios that works with the Core 2 Duo chips.

    Ok that makes sense.

But can someone tell me if the Core Duo CPU in the dv8000t is a socket type or a solder on type. Cause that will be the real final answer for me. :)

    Thanks

most likely, it is socketed. you only solder when you want to reduce the thickness, which is usually not something done on a 17" notebook.
