    Hello All,

I'm trying to do a clean install of XP on my 8339, but right out of the gate I'm getting the "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer." message.

I guess I need to hit F6 and add the third party drivers, but not sure what to use or how to load them as this unit doesn't have a floppy drive.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

You need to download the SATA HD driver from the HP download site for your model notebook, the driver is the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" and install it at the proper time.

You can google, making a XP install disk with the SATA drivers slipstreamed on it but if you are a PC novice you might do better buying a USB floppy drive, I think they can be had for $20 or so.

Yeah, the problem is HP puts those drivers in an .exe that looks for a floppy drive to load them into. Of course, I haven't had a floppy drive for about 3 years.

Will a usb floppy be recognized by windows setup on my laptop, when I try to point it in the direction of the drivers? When I select to add third party drivers during the install, it comes back with "Setup could not find a floppy disk on your machine to load OEM drivers from floppy disk" :(

Yes, it will find the USB floppy. I know its hard to believe that there is no easy way to do this without the floppy drive which is archaic now.

Although if you can work your way through the slipstream process, not that difficult, you can get by without the floppy drive. Just make sure you always have a working computer to download the required files / programs and be able to burn a DVD. You can find the process by googling.

So, the easy way around this was to disable sata in the bios. Unbelievable. I found a post detailing the process for the dv8000's and it worked like a charm.

You disable sata, then setup sees the drives, load XP, load the sata driver through the device manager and turn sata back on.

Yes, I should have had you look in BIOS for that option but many of the newer BIOS updates don't have that feature, mine doesn't. Maybe they removed the option so they could sell more USB floppies  Glad you found an easy solution.
