I have a DV9000 and just yesterday it started where the screen will go black but I can see what is going on on the screen but it is extremely faint. When I close the lid for a few seconds and open it back up it the screen appears like normal but only for about twenty seconds and then returns to the black. If I hook it up to an external monitor and I can see what is going on.

Sounds like the backlight has failed; is the unit under warranty? You can simply send it in to HP for repair. Otherwise, you would have to find the part on HP's website and look elsewhere (such as eBay) for a better price.

If that were the case, his external monitor would not display a picture.

Also it is not flickering it is just going Extremely faint, I was thinking that their was a connection loose or something (maybe with the Backlight) which would explain why it works when I close the lid and open it again. Maybe the wire connects. What do you think about this?

I found a backlight for $14 on Ebay Brand New

True, a loose connection may be causing the problem; you'll have to dismantle the laptop anyway if there is no loose connection, so it would be worthwhile to take it apart and check the connections ahead of ordering the new. If it still doesn't work, you can just leave it unassembled.

I had this same problem with my dv9000 and it got worse and I had to send it in for "bevel replacement". This is a common problem with these. If you search the forum, you'll find more posts about it. If you're still under warranty, you should call the 800 number and get it replaced.

It is not under warranty unfortunately, also I did not find anything on "bevel replacement dv9000" or "bevel replacement" on either this site or google all together. Can you explain what this is? Or shoot me a link that I can read about it? I am going to call hp and see how much it will cost for them to fix it and maybe call the local repair shop but if I can do it without screwing stuff up that would be ideal.

Dim screen is usually from bad inverter or backlight.
Replace the inverter is very simple, you don't need bring it to a repair shop.
    For your information:

Select your model, then FRU/Remove/Replace. Watch it to know procedures, but many steps are unneccessary to remove the Lcd in order to replace the inverter.
