    I received my DV9000 on November 27th from HP.com.

I noticed I’m having the restart issue that some folks have reported on this forum. This happens after using the laptop for a short period of time, and you turn off the laptop, if you attempt to restart the computer it will not restart. If you wait 5 to 10 minutes then the laptop will power up.

I talked with HP tech support and the first guy had me do a PC recovery. This did not help the situation. (I didn’t think it would but went along anyway….)

The second guy had me try several of the options mentioned on this forum. He had me “up-date” the BIOS to F.06 even though my laptop was currently running F.08. Then we removed the battery and held the power button down for 30seconds to 1 min (to clear the capacitors and static charges) then reinstall the battery. Then we tried running on AC without the battery. In my case, nothing seemed to work.

At this point he is sending me a box to have my new laptop repaired or replaced. He said he believes there is something wrong with the BIOS.

I’m just curious to see if any other DV9000 users have been experiencing this issue??

Welcome to the forums. HP loves to blame the BIOS for any issue it seems

That's great they had you install an older BIOS to try and resolve the problem. I've actually not heard of this issue, my first suggestion was going to be that the laptop is overheating and not booting up on restart because the temp is too high -- but you said it's happening after it's been turned on for short periods of time. Does the notebook get extremely warm at all? Can you link to threads where you see this same issue discussed? I can't seem to find them.

    abaxter,

    Thanks for the welcome.

Sunday I fired up the computer before my second call to HP tech support. I let it run maybe 2 or 3 mins and powered down. It did start fine. I then let it run another 3 or 4 mins, powered down, and it would not re-start for about 5 to 10 mins. I don't really feel any excessive hot spots on the laptop and the fan seems to be running fine.

Here are a couple of links where I had found some info on the forum:

    Thanks again...

Interesting, it seems the other posters had their problems fixed with a BIOS update and clearing the capacitors. I don't think this is an epidemic problem like with the dv8000 keyboard issues ( http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3262&article=HP+Laptop+Keyboard+Problems) and unfortunately it seems you might have bad luck here in getting a faulty unit. I'd follow through with the return and see what comes of it as I can't see what else you have left to try given the time you've spent with support already, hopefully they get you sorted out. Let us know how it goes, or maybe if others have suggestions in the forum they'll find this post and report them.

I'm going to second a return on that laptop. Having it run for a few minutes at a time wouldn't make it hot enough (unless some fans aren't working), so something is definitely busted in there.

Usually, if anything is wrong I just return it and rebuy. Then I have another 21 or 30 days to decide if I want to keep it, and also time to look for more problems.

    To the OP..

If you are within the 21-day return window you do NOT want to get the unit "repaired".

Tell them you want a new want shipped out ASAP.

Either that OR better yet get a refund of your money, and buy a replacement unit thru COSTCO... either in store, or via the net www.costco.com

People are reporting getting units back NOT repaired, units being received back after "repair" DAMAGED... If you do go that route you would be well advised to takes pictures of the unit, with a newspaper showing a current headline /date.... Or better yet do the above, and write up a short document to be notarized to as the condition of the unit to back up those pictures. (Most banks will do a free notary service)

It would be hard for HP later to jerk you around on the condition of a machine sent in for service with Pic's, Newspaper showing major headline, and a sworn notarized document to the condition of the unit.

    Why COSTCO?

    COSTCO -180 day return window
BestBuy - 14 day return window (INFO FILLED IN BY MODERATOR W/ PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF BB RETURNS)
    HP Shopping 21-day return window
    Newegg 30? day return window

PS: Before you choose the repair route, read thru the thread on the dv8000 keyboard problems: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=57325

Additonally if you can get your money back now, which you should be able to do if you're within 21-days, really do consider repurchasing thru COSTCO....

Why return the unit outright?... well you get a new unit,... and HP gets back a unit to put in their "refurb" pile...

I'm of the mindset that if a defective unit is shipped out, the unit should be returned so it goes into the refurb pile of the mfg as a way to penalize $$$$$ the mfg for poor quality control. Mfg loses money which equates into tighter quailty control ... More units that are returned, the FASTER someone's going to starting addressing those quality control issues!

Consumer puts up with sloppy work... no skin off mfg's teeth so to speak and units keep getting shipped out with sub-standard parts.
(Yes I know not every part is perfect, before anyone brings that up)

In the end, I opted to have them replace my laptop with a new one. (It was not even a week old it should not have to be fixed). So I boxed up the computer and shipped it out this morning. I'll let you know how I make out with the new one.

(I somehow feel they will screw something up on my order but we'll see.)

Thanks for all the advice, I wish I had found this forum before I bought my laptop!

    tdeyette,

Hope it works out for you... You did read thru those links I posted above, right? http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=57325

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=1692400&postcount=6

If you're within 21-days you could get your money back and go elsewhere.

PS: What do you think about a company (HP) that tries to sort of force someone with a item that's only 7 days old into a "repair".... Or to even suggest such?

To me if you're within HP's 21 day return window a customer after running a restore still having a problem should be shipped out a brand-spanking new unit NO questions asked. PERIOD. I don't know how the tech was with you, but other posters had really been raked over the coals, with the tech trying to force a repair on them.

    Best of luck...
