I'm looking at the dv9000t maxed out, so I went to compusa the other day to get a look at it. I must say, a rather solid looking machine only 2 things causing hesitation.

1: When I used the touchpad in the store the texture was almost irritating to use. Do you get used to this?

2: the small right shift key, I'm sure in time I would get used to this.

I use my laptops more than most people, I go through about 1 every 2 years cause they just can't hold up. The one i'm retiring litterally has holes worn in the palm rest from so much usage.

    any help would be great.

    P.S.

Here are the laptops I'm looking at:

    dv9000t
    xps m1710
    vgn-ar270

i would recommend te dell xps m1710 anyday bcuz it has solid customer support and dedicated hardware support and the build quality and the graphic card is better than te other two you hace mentioned but the only steep point is te price
priceways te dv9000t wins as it has the best price features ratio....about the touchpad im sure ull get used to it if u dont u can always disable it using thte button rite above the touchpad and use a mouse which in my opinion is more practical for me atleast
the sony if im not mistaken is a bit costly but again te build quality is pretty solid
    all the best choosing
    cheers,

Your observation about the touchpad texture is supported by the HP dv9000t review on this website.

But, of the 3 notebooks you mention, the dv9000t offers you the most features for your money. The others are way too pricey.

Thank you for the link to the review. I have read that before as well as reviews on my other choices as well. I guess what I'm asking, is there someone who has a similar HP dv model with the same touchpad that has been using it for some time now?

How are you adopting to the strange feel of the touchpad?

Here's what I've come up with in reviewing my 3 choices.

    dv9000t

    Pros:
    • cheapest for what you get, you can really deck this thing out for less than the price of the other 2.
    • the media keys are a nice touch
    • hd-dvd option: I'm a fan of hd-dvd over bluray
    • optional docking bay
    • dual headphone jacks
    • built in webcam
    • option of 2 hard drives

    Cons:
    • irritating touchpad
    • small shift key
    • screen resolution is only wsxga other are wuxga
    • hd-dvd is not an hd-dvd burner

    xps m1710

    Pros:
    • blazing fast, outperforms the other 2 by a considerable margin
    • bluray with burning capability
    • blazing fast
    • decent battery life considering the machine
    • wuxga display

    Cons:
    • pricey as hell
    • no vid cam
    • only 1 hard drive
    • not sure I like the media buttons being located on the front

    vgn-ar270

    Pros:
    • integrated web cam
    • wuxga display
    • bluray with burning capability
    • optional docking bay

    Cons:
    • only 1 hard drive
    • can't find any reviews at all
    • only uses 533mhz ram

At this point I'm really not leaning toward any of them just yet. I welcome input from everyone.

well why dont you look into te dell e1705 then it has a gr8 graphic card for the price but the only thing i guess yo wuldnt like is the no integrated mic and am and the media buttons on the front but then again....you have to sacrifice sumthing rite.....it makes up by having a superb grapic card and and a great scrre and the price is to features ratio isnt that bad either

My DV9000 is 4th laptop from HP/Compaq and use 20+ hours of doing work (lots of typing) and probably another of that amount surfing. So far I've found:

    1. DV9000 touchpad to be smoothest and easiest on the finger tips, not abrasive at all like my previous touchpads. Unlike other reviews of this touchpad, I like this the best.

    2. As much as I was worried about the right shift key, which I found out about its size after my order was placed, It wasn't a problem at all. This key was thoughtfully placed where my pinky would normally strike. I think you would adapt to it easily.

If anybody learns anything from these forum let it be that when it comes to HP...."There business line is the way to go". I myself hated the touch pad texture and hated the beveled click buttons even more.Spend the extra dough and get a 9440.
