    Hi all,

Please help as my laptop speaker out of order. No voice come out from the built-in speaker or even external speaker. I've called Hong Kong HP support hotline, they just told me to perform System Recovery but the problem still cannot be fixed. Then, they asked me to send back the laptop to them for repairing (maybe the sound card malfunction). It is my new laptop which was purchased only about 10 days ago.

Do you guys experienced the same problem before ? How come the HP sound card is not reliable !!

    .

If the problem is still there after a restore, there's a hardware problem. Sound card is on the motherboard, so the unit needs a new motherboard.

If you have a "return" window with the vendor you purchased it thru it would be BETTER to swap it out for a NEW one, than having it "repaired"...

Return it, you get a NEW unit and let HP repair the 10 day old unit and let them put it in their "refurb" program.

    Hi all,

I just returned my laptop to HP for repairing my sound card. I think they need to replace a new motherboard for me.

Do I need to reinstall the OS again after repairing ? HP said no affect to the hard disc as caused by motherboard replacement.

One more question, I want to know the difference between restore the OS by the recovery DVDs (self created from hard disc) and the recovery partition in hard disc.

I believe that my system is messed as I have restored the OS two times by the recovery DVDs (some duplicate files/folders found in my C drive). Also, I have installed a PC game in the laptop, the software still can run after the recovery but it seems that the registry data is lost. As I try to download the patch from the game official website, but my copy cannot be identifed. I even cannot uninstalled the game.

Any suggestion to fix this problem. I mean how to erase all unwanted data safely.

    Many thanks !!

The old files being present after a reinstall is mostly due to the fact that you are just doing a non-destructive recovery which as the name implies just reinstalls XP while maintaining your files intact. Do a regular destructive recovery and the old files should be deleted and the laptop should be bac to factry state. If for some reason this doesnt fix it, then just reformat the entire drive and then use the rcovery DVD.

    Thanks Miner's reply.

May I know how to perform destructive recovery. Or in other words, how to choose destructive or non-destructive recovery in the system ?

I havent used the recovery DVD recently, but if I remember correctly there should be an advanced option/tab when you boot with the 1st DVD. Just boot into the 1st DVD and lok for such an option.
