I just got a DV9060us (2GB/240GB) XP MCE with the Toshiba HD DVD drive.
It plays data cd's, audio cd's, DVD's and burns fine. However it WON'T play any HD DVD's. I have several and none will play. I am using Quickplay ver. 2.3 with the last update patch. NOTHING. HP support has been useless. They even thought it was a defective drive and shipped a replacement but it acts exactly the same as the original drive. You will see thes DV9060us models running XP MCE in quite a few places such as Amazom, eCost, Newegg etc. these days. I can't believe none of them work. I have even tried connecting my HD TV via HDMI to the DV9060 to see if that was required to get it to play. So nearly 20 HD DVD's later, none will play and the HP support staff have no idea what I am talking about or how to help anymore.
Anyone solve this mystery or can help. I LOVE the DV9000 but this is SO depressing !

I believe you need a DVD player that is capable of playing HD DVDs. I'm at a loss right now as to who has that software, but it sounds like your hardware is fine.
-
I was tempted to buy Cyberlink Power DVD ultra which claims to be able to play HD-DVD's since it seems the necessary hardware is there. However, at $100 it is a bit of a risk and it appears Cyberlink does not allow any demo or try-it downloads of that version.

I have the toshiba drive in my dv9000 is it the TS-L802A, also what firmware version and speeds can you burn DVDs? I have only tried one HD-DVD on it and it's the one that came with the laptop (bourne supremacy) and it works fine. I think it ran in quickplay. Try updating quickplay to the latest and all your other drivers too. You need a HDMI compliant video card too eh? yours the go7600 right?
-
Have you updated your graphics driver? You MUST have valid/signed HDCP-enabled graphics drivers installed in order to watch an HD DVD. Basically, you need to use the one's that shipped with the notebook, or one's officially released by HP.
Also, are you normally trying to watch HD DVDs on your internal screen, or on an external monitor? Definitely try the internal screen, with no mirroring/second monitor/etc. hooked up.
Those are the biggest cause of problems with HD DVD and Blu-ray.
If still no joy, I know Intervideo just revoked all their AACS player keys, and issued a mandatory update if you wanted to watch Blu-ray or HD DVD discs. I don't know if Cyberlink (who makes QuickPlay for HP) did the same, or not. Unfortunately, QuickPlay doesn't give as much info to you as WinDVD or PowerDVD do, so it's not as easy to troubleshoot. You can definitely give either of those a shot. The latest versions of both support HD DVD (in their more expensive packages only, though), and you'll be able to get more support if you still can't get anything to play.
Speaking of support, if you still can't get a movie to play, I would go to Cyberlink's website, and contact them, since they made the software solution, and HP is no help.
Good luck. -
Wanted to add some of the current specs for my DC9060us that will not play any HD DVD's.
HP DV9060us 2/240GB, Intel Core 2 Duo T5500
Win XP MCE,
Toshiba TS-L802A HD-DVD drive (driver 5.1.2535.0),
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 (driver 8.6.3.8)
QuickPlay 2.3 3831
Quickplay seems to be the most current for XP and the Toshiba drive is playing std DVD's, CD's and burns CD/DVD's just fine while 0 HD-DVD's.
Note: I just returned from a local CircuitCity where they had a DV9260 running Visa and a Toshiba HD-DVD drive. Tried 2 HD-DVD's and it would not work either. However those same 2 HDDVD's played fine on a nearby Toshiba Qosmio w/ HD-DVD drive. Bizarre ! -
It sounds like a QuickPlay issue to me -- makes me think that either the player key was revoked, or that in updating the software, HD DVD compatibility broke.
I would try reinstalling the version of QuickPlay that shipped with the machine (from the C:\SwSetup directory) and see if that plays movies.
If not, it may be time to try one ofthe other players... but the free trials offered by Cyberlink and Intervideo don't seem to play HD DVDs, so you'd actually have to buy the product to test it. -
The latest in the saga.....
HP Support claims that certain HD-DVD will not play on theDV9000 models with HD-DVD drives. They pointed me to tiny print 4 pages deep on their web site. HP says I now have all the current versions and drivers. I have tried the 21 HD-DVD's I own and have now tried 6 from Netflix. None work. Rep said I just happended to stumble across a batch of movies that won't work. When asked to identify 1 that they know WILL work, they could not. The answer, keep trying other movies. Also, they will not let me return it. -
This should let you know if your machine is at least ready...

It does seem though that the only thing you're missing is the correct software.
You also try forcing the install of QP version 3. Read the stuff by brt02...

I haven't tested it myself since I'm running Vista and don't have HD-DVD anyways. -
I actually kind of agree with their statement that "certain" discs may not work. A number of recent HD DVDs just don't seem to work right, even on dedicated stand alone players. But if you're tried 27 discs, obviously the problem is their software -- or a hardware design incompatible with AACS protection. But since their were some reviews of the machine playing HD DVDs, that shouldn't be it.
Did your machine EVER play HD DVDs? You could do a system restore to get the system back to its original shipping status, which, if it played HD DVDs at the time, then it should again.
More than likely, it's still just a Quickplay problem. Reinstalling the original Quickplay version on your PC, or force installing QuickPlay 3 (as spaceman suggested) might work. I'm leaning toward a revoked AACS key, but I don't know for sure.
Personally, I would buy Cyberlink's PowerDVD Ultra from their website. It's $100 unfortunately, but it is an excellent player. -
You could find a cracked version of the software and at least see if that plays the movies. If it does then you know it's what you need so you can buy the legit version, otherwise it's just a waste of money paying $100 for a feature that still won't work. I don't recommend you do this but it is a reasonable suggestion considering HP are not being helpful and quickplay is a cyberlink product that could be at fault if it isn't a hardware issue.

First a THANK YOU to everyone that replied and tried to help. It is because of you guys I FINALLY am able to play HD-DVD's on my DV9060us. From day 1 it never worked. After 6-7 calls to HP, hours upon hours talking with HP tech support, driver updates, a new Toshiba HD-DVD drive and a complete rebuild, I still was unable to play ANY HD-DVD's.
However, I followed the tips from the forum and happy to report IT WORKS !
I believe the Toshiba HD-DVD original drive was fine all along. It was a combination of updated drivers and the correct version of QuickPlay.
Upon some digging, the HP shipped with 2 copies of Quickplay on the C: drive. The one that was installed originally as well as the one that installed as part of the system restore/recover process was not HD compatible. Even after suggesting Quickplay versions as a possibility, HP was CONVINCED I had the right version running.
Odd thing is that the HD compatible version I needed was there sitting in C:\SwSetup directory. I manually uninstalled the old version, replaced it with this updated version and now things work fine !
I am up to 6 HD-DVD's so far and ALL have worked fine.
Thanks to everyone and their input. -
Glad to hear!
Now, you just have to fear that any Quickplay or driver update on your machine will break it again. I've never been one for "cracking" software, but all of those working to break the draconian AACS are good in my book. I've never seen a DRM implementation that did more to prevent legal playback and less to stop illegal copying and mass distribution. Everyone involved (in both HD DVD and Blu-ray camps) in accepting this should be ashamed of themselves -- and they deserve to suffer the consequences (mass piracy of HD content).
// Rant off.
Seriously, glad you got it working. -
I'm having the same problems with my HP dv9060us. It will not play HD DVDs. I tried to reinstall HP Quickplay but for some reason when I restart, after the install, it is nowhere to be found. Do I have to reinstall the whole operating system or is there an easier way to do this?
-
TR3N3TY -- look in your C:\Program Files\Hp\QuickPlay directory to make sure Quickplay actually installed. You should then be able to run QP.exe to start Quickplay.
If the directory doesn't exist, or there's no files there, try installing again from you C:\SwSetup directory.
See if manually launching the QP.exe file, launches an HD DVD compatible version of Quickplay or not, and let us know. Trying to troubleshoot further and get things set up right, is really dependent on that.
Oh, yeah, and welcome to the boards! -
What FINALLY worked for me seemed to be an older version of QuickPlay.
First I did a complete system restore/recover from the HP partition.
This installed Quickplay version 2.3 3203 -hp
Note that HP Support wanted me to update to version 2.3 3831 -hp
I did try this but it did not help at all.
I looked in C:\SwSetup directory
I found 2 version of quicklplay and installed them to see if one would help. What I have now is:
QuickPlay ver 2.3 3203 hp. This is the version that boots when the PC is OFF and reads "QuickPlay Direct". This works fine for everything except HD DVD.
When I fully boot XP the version that runs is QuickPlay ver 2.3 3119 hp.
This version will show "HD-DVD" below the Quickplay logo and this DOES play HD-DVD's just fine for me. -
I found the right version and it worked. Thank you so much for your quick replies. Now I have to call HP tech support and tell them not to send the replacement drive that they thought would work. It amazes me how much they don't know about their own products. Anyway, I could go on and on...Again thank you for your expertise, you all are amazing. Take care everyone.

I got here too late to save you all the hair pulling
I ran across the forums because I am much intrested in the dv9260 and found a slew of complaints about poor tech support and lack of help in manuals and sutch.
google ran me here tho and luckily im a computer junky
definitly it was the software (we all know that now) there are also versions of windows media that play HD DVDS and Cyberlinks PowerDVD software.
It may not be the most "honest" thing in the world to do but there is free ways to get this stuff.
the 9260 is so rare I can find almost no reviews on the net about it :/
While semi on topic about hd-dvd's if anybody has envy of sombody with one on there desktop/laptop and wants one themselves the cheapest one to get right now is actually the hd-dvd player for the xbox 360! it can connect to your computer via usb and play hd-dvds just fine. With a cupon they have been as low as 160$.
Also on that note, looks like overseas bluray is winning the war in next gen format. I tend to agree it seems more advanced and can hold alot more data, just more expensive :X
edit: one last thing. My biggest major complaint about the 9260 and it probably holds true for the 9060 is the native resolution is 1440x900 as im sure you well know if your into the hi-def scene native res for most HD content is 1920x1080. I just cant belive they would make a "multimedia" notebook with a built in hd-dvd player that cant even properly display hd content. That means your squishing the video to fit on screen and thus losing the original quality. Granted you wont notice probably its still quite bothersom to me. 1920x1200 is a very common computer resolution and should have been an option atleast. the 1705 from dell has this and is my 2nd option. Im just thinking it over for now. -
Hi guys!
Maybe it a good news for everyone who has the same problem as I had!
PleasHi!!!
I have a very good news for you!
I was up all night and I down loaded quickplay four times. I was really tired, after nothing happened, but after all those times spending with, something has changed.
The face of Quickplay has changed and I found a HD dvd logo on the right bottom of my sreen.
I was so happy to see that, but soon I had to realize that, I'm still not able to watch the HD movie on my laptop. After that I was reinstalling the program(quickplay)wich has allready existed in my computer, and so and so....!
After the third reinstalliation, QUICKPLAY has asked me if I wnt to check for update. The first time nothing happened, but I had the feeling, I was doing something, so I kept installing again. After another twoo instalation the upgrade has started, finaly. After that Quickplay has disapered from my desktop. I was waithing after the installation, but nothing happened. I started to look for in my programs, and I was surprised, because it was there. I clicked on the Quickplay tab and I have get a brand new Quickplay.
It was black and white before and it is colored now.It just works fine with all of my HD dvds. I updated the driver couple of times during the whole process from HP webside. I was talking to six HP technicians in 48 hours and the last one could hel, becaus she sent me the previous version of quckplay and I was able to take the last stepp fromthere to update to the latest wersion of Quickplay.I hope that I could help.
Sorry for my English, I'm still working on it!
Here are the version of the previious wersion of Quickplay: first I downloaded Quickplay itself, then I did the SP35813 version wich was installed by me three times.
