XP 64-bit already has low driver and software support. I will look around and do a little searching for this, but I highly doubt you will find every driver for the hardware in the laptop. I've been running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on the desktop I just built and it's been running great. I've only had a couple little hiccups here and there, but nothing that has caused me any big problems. I would suggest giving Vista Ultimate 64-bit a try and see how you like it. In all honesty Vista handles each core in a multi core processor individually, where XP will only balance the load over all the cores equally. Give it some time and Vista will get a lot better, I mean look at XP when it first came out.

Please post all the hardware that is in the machine and the manufacturer so we can help you look for XP 64bit drivers.

XP x64 hardly works, and everything I have seen says to stay away from it. 64bit Vista drivers will NOT work on it. I would really consider Vista 64bit as your only (windows) 64bit option.

As for RAM, you have 4GB, so what are you worried about? :) Actually anything that's loaded but not being used will be swapped out to disk, so it will not really be taking up your real RAM. That will leave plenty free for whatever RAM intensive application you are trying to use.

XP x64 is very stable and does not eat up RAM or CPU its very similar to 2003.

I will try to use Vista x64 since drivers are readily available; I did some tunning and was able to reduce CPU usage and RAM usage hopefully with some additional tunning I will be able to make it somewhat reasonable. I should of bought a better video card Vista is very video intensive. How hard to upgrade it?

Vista doesn't eat up RAM. The reason why you are seeing 1GB of RAM being used in Vista, is because it is preloading programs that it learns you use on a regular basis, that way, it will load twice as fast when you run the program. So it's not eating up RAM or wasting it, its taking advantage of it for your benefit. I just built a desktop computer and I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and so far its been great!

I had the same configuration as you when I purchased my dv9500t, except I got the 8600m GS vid card. I had Vista Ultimate 64-bit installed on it and I had no problems. One thing you might want to do is turn off Vista Shadow Copy. Vista Shadow Copy is similar to System Restore in XP, except it literally makes a backup of all the files on your system. By default it is setup to use upto 15% of your HDD space, and it fills up rather quickly. There is a post in this forum (just search shadow copy for the thread name) and it will explain what you have to do to turn it off and different settings you can use.

As for upgrading your video card, sadly you can't. On HP's and most laptops, the video card is soldered onto the motherboard and can't be swapped out. How long have you had your laptop? If it's still under the two weeks you can return it and get your money back with no questions asked and then purchase another one.

Good post Envision, but I would say to not disable Volume Shadow Copy unless you actually need the disk space. Just like with RAM that's sitting there doing nothing, disk space that's unused is also a waste. Might as well use it for backups and safety purposes until you need it for something else.

Very True. If you do have the extra disk space I would have to agree with you, but for the people that don't have the extra space this is something valuable for them to know (actually it's still valuable information for everybody). Also, if you have very large HDDs, Vista will use the 15% by default (Shadow Copy will only use the system partition to store the data, so the 15% is only taken away when needed from the system partition), which means the bigger the HDD the more space it takes up, so some people might want to adjust the amount of space that Vista uses for Shadow Copy.

Wait, it only goes twice as fast to load a program that's preloaded into the RAM? That sounds kind of weird as the speed is of the magnitude of GB/s compared to hdd's MB/s.

"twice as fast" is a colloquialism, not a benchmark.
