    First off,
this is the greatest forum, props to all the knowledgeable people here!

I got a brand spankin new HP DV9700 about a month ago, and right out of the box it had problems with this annoying sound distortion in the background when listening to music and even more so watching tv-shows, movies.
It's this wheening and morse crackling kind of thing that's constantly on in the background unless you mute. When listening to music you can't really hear it, but when watching recorded tv-shows (which I do alot and that's why it's a problem) and there is dialogue, this sound is very much hearable in the background.
I have the Realtek HD Audio software that came pre-installed with the laptop, and have updated to the latest driver on HP's site. Realtek has an even newer audio codec out on their site, but when I tried to update to that one, it removes the earlier version from Hp's site, and the new version is not detected by the computer.

I have the warranty and know I can contact support and get it exchanged, but I rather try to fix it myself before going through that hassle, and all they gonna tell you is to update drivers and bla bla bla.
    Any ideas? Vi
Vista compability issues? Motherboard? Should I get an external soundcard?

I know others who have had the same problem and when they exchange the laptop, they get a new one with the same problem...

    Thanks for any input!

I am not sure it's the same as the sound distortion you are getting but I had problems with pops and crackling sound after I updated to SP1 on Vista Home 32bit (thread in this forum about known problems with Realtek and SP1). I first used the updated HP drivers and they didnt fix any problems so then I downloaded the R1.93 drivers (these have been updated FYI but since I am having no problems I haven't updated) directly from Realtek and all my sound problems stopped and I still have all the functionality of my quicklaunch buttons with the sounds and the buttons turning amber all work
