    Does anybody else think so?

Whenever I put a DVD or CD in the drive, it makes some fairly loud clicking noises as it accesses data on the disk; not just the usual spin up sound(s) but a clicking noise.

Otherwise it seems to work fine (reads/writes disks and Lightscribe works fine).

Hey Sea, thanks for giving me this link. I too think the dvd drive is little noisy.. Not that bad though. It is just slightly louder than my old zd's. On that note, I got a calll from Hp yeterday saying my zd will ship out on Mon. I said--------------------------OK!! When and if I get it back I will call my case manager to see what I should do with it... Funny how things work out.. As far as getting more volumn out of my conexant driver, I went to update, and bingo, it is 50% Better.. But not still not as load as my zd.

Just got my 9700t the other day and noticed the same thing... sounds really clunky when its reading, I think more with DVD than CD... but also reads/writes fine so far (2 days!) - how long have you had yours and has the noise gotten any worse?

Hi mech! Lots and lots of good stuff here; just like the old ZD forums.

Freaky about the ZD! It would be interesting to see if it shows up; the refurb ZDs are selling for about $450-500 on eBay. :D

Tod, I've only had mine since April 10th so I'm just getting used to it; you're right, more with reading DVDs than writing DVDs or reading/writing CDs. I just don't want it to crap out, although it is an easy replacement, 1 screw behind the battery.

Ive always found cd drives on notebooks very loud, maybe because of their minimized size.

How loud are we talking about?

All the notebooks ive come across are all loud

That's hard to quantify objectively; as mech20201 pointed out, it's definitely louder than the CD/DVD drive on the old ZD7000. It's not so much the loud whirring (spin up, spin down) as the loud clicking as it accesses the data on the disk; it seems to last 30-45 seconds then settles down. I think I've heard other drives do it but am just trying to be sure it's not a bad drive.

Off topic: I'm also a little concerned because the entire qwerty keyboard is solid but the numeric keypad is flexy at the top, almost like something isn't totally secured. In the manual, the picture shows something solid under the keyboard so I don't mind as long as it doesn't cause the keyboard to fail once it's out of warranty.

I think I'm being a little paranoid because of some of the stuff I've read here about the DV series.

When im installing games from a cd, i can hear loud insane noises (sounds like its reading back and forth 100 times a second). Other than that, the usual loud cd drive loading noise

As for your numpad, it just needs re-seating and maybe some paper/electric tape underneath to keep it stiff. Its fairly easy to take out the keyboard module, should only be 3 screws and un-attaching it properly. Im not 100% sure because you have a dv9000 which is sorta like the dv2000/6000

I guess I'll wait and see what happens, worst case, I'll get service involved; at least I can get them to cross-ship the drive 'cause it's only 1 screw to replace.

As for the keypad, I'll have to see how adventurous I'm feeling.
