My fan seems to be running non-stop, even when my system is idle. Does this seem to be normal? I have an old compaq x1000, and the fan would rarely turn on, and stay fairly cool. I thought these new processors were supposed to be more efficient and run cooler.

is it loud? Mine doesn't seem to be running all the time. I can only hear the fan when I go into a game.

It should not be running full-blast all the time when the computer is idle. Idle means it's not doing anything, like it's not converting videos or mp3s, not downloading stuff, not running as virus scan or disk optimize. If you're not doing any of that, open the task manager (Press "Ctrl-Shift-Esc") and look at the "CPU" column. See if there's anything using a lot of the CPU (It will be 50 or 100% used).

I installed CPUID Hardware Manager, and my core temps hover around 55-57 when my computer is doing nothing. I think that's why my fan is always running. When I hold my laptop off my desk and cool the cpu below 50, the fan slows down, but doesn't shut off. When I unplug the computer, the cpu temp drops to arond 46 and the fan shuts off, but then my gpu temp starts rising steadily to mid 60's. does it seem normal for the cpu to be around 55 at idle?

No, it should not be doing that. Please read my post above and give us a list or screenshot of the running processes you have.

It could be a vent is blocked internally, or the heat sink was not installed properly. Since it's a 9700, you probably just got it. If it's within your 21 day return policy I would return it. Otherwise call HP and take it in for warranty service.

If you are familiar with computers, you may be able to open it up and check those things, but only do that if you know what you're doing.
