Hi guys. This is my first post on this forum so go easy on me. Anyways, I recently purchased this machine (last week), and the first order of business for me was to upgrade from vista home premium to vista ultimate (yea had it laying around for a couple of months). Before upgrading I used one of my favorite programs, drivermax, which is for backing up drivers. I figured this would back up all the drivers I would need and if need be I could use the restore partition built into the machines. Well aparently the fingerprint driver (authentec ver 7.9.0.4) doesn't want to work on this version, OR I'm a retard and just need the software. I torn the internet a new one looking for something that would make this work, but to no avail. As a last ditch resort I decided to restore the computer back but the restore key (f11) is only taking me to the bios now. So I'll prolly end up reinstalling anyways to get those 10gb back but I would like to get this fingerprint reader working. Do you think I just need the swsetup folder or is there something I'm missing? Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance.

    Jay

P.S. Next step is dual booting with Ubuntu so wish me luck.

There isn't a difference in how Vista Ultimate and Home Premium, just features. Vista Ultimate only has more features than Home Premium, there isn't a difference in how the OS works, how programs interact with the OS, and how drivers interact with the OS. If you went to HP's website you'll be able to download the drivers for the fingerprint reader, and the software that it needs to interact with the OS so you can use it for passwords. Remember though, you need the drivers and software for the fingerprint reader to be fully functional.

That's the direction I was leaning in. It looks like I'm just missing the software now. I don't see it on the HP driver site either. Does anyone know of another site I can get the software from?

np i had the same problem when i redid my laptop for 64 bit. they don't put that software with the drivers on the driver page which they should. but when ever somebody says they redid there pc and the finger print reader doesn't work i always give them the reader software first because thats usually the problem
