Hi,
I have an HP DV9930US, and the internal/built-in microphone (actually, I think there are suppose to be two, surrounding the webcam at the top of the display) is not working. When I try it, I get no input, e.g., with Sound Recorder, I just get "noise".
I've tried this with the original Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and Windows 2003 (I multi-boot), and I've tried every possible driver (including both the ones from HP and the direct Realtek ones) and setting that I can find, but no success...
I haven't had a need for using the mic, so I don't think that I had tried it when I originally got the laptop, so I don't know if it ever worked...
I've partially disassembled the laptop, and confirmed that the microphone connector that goes from the display to the small (~1" x 1") board is properly connected. I haven't opened up the display bezel to check what's going on there.
Also, if I plug an external microphone into the jack at the front of the laptop, that does work.
So, I was wondering: Does anyone have a DV9930US, or something in the same series, and if so, does your internal microphone work? Did you have to do something "special" to get it to work?
Or, maybe someone has an idea how to figure out how to make it work?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
I bought a replacement mic assembly off of Ebay, which just arrived today. However, even after I plugged that in place of the ones in the display bezel, still no sound...
So, I don't quite understand what the problem might be.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Hi,
For the record, I finally found the problem.
In the DV9930US, there's a small (1"x1") PCB called the "power button board". This has the power button, and 3 pinned connectors, plus a flat cable connector.
The microphones in the display bezel connect to one of the 3 pinned connectors, and the flat cable goes, I think to the actual audio board.
I had replaced the microphones, which didn't fix the problem, so I bought a replacement power button board, which luckily, came with a new flat cable.
It turned out that the original flat cable going from the power button board to the audio board was bad. I replaced the flat cable, and then the internal mics worked.
