first laptop i've gotten with a 17" screen. don't normally watch dvd's on computers but it supports blu ray and i'd like to give it a whirl. what all is considered the best program for playback and what is the recommended aspect ratio and whatnot?

same question for just basic avi tv/dvdrips.

to play Blu ray disc's you will need a Blu ray playing software. WMP and VLC will not play Blu ray disk. PowerDVD 8 or latter I believe can play Blu ray, but you need to pay for it.

If you have burning software, such as Nero that is already upgraded, then it should support playing of BR. Most players, including what comes with it unfortunately, will need an upgrade to take advantage of BR.

Just as an aside, have you tried playing a disc with the HP software or Cyberlink (which I almost guarentee you'll need to upgrade)?
