I remember reading a review for the HP nc8430 that said the DVD/CD-RW Combo option doesn't allow for burning DVDs, so I suspect that the DVD+/-RW option does. I want the option that DOES allow for DVD burning when I place my order, but I'm not sure what the difference is between these two terms.

Your understanding is correct. Keep in mind that optical drives are usually upgradeable. A modern optical drive for notebook would also include -DL option
for dual layer burning. -
To Laser,
Yes that is correct, as Ivar said;
From pg.27 NC8430 Quickspec's;
Supported Media (write)
CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM
Max Media Capacity
(read) 8.5 GB
Max Media Capacity
(write) 8.5 GB
Type "NC8430 Quickspecs" in your search browser and
d/l the .pdf file, handy info to have.
Hope that helps, Regards, don

well in newer drives theres the feature of superscribe too isnt there it allows you to draw a picture onto the cd witout using ink but simply by using a laser its quite a cool feature to have and also useful
-
You mean lightscribe.
The combo drives are simply dvd readers and cd burners. Definitely go for the DVD +R/-RW stuff. -
