I remember reading a review for the HP nc8430 that said the DVD/CD-RW Combo option doesn't allow for burning DVDs, so I suspect that the DVD+/-RW option does. I want the option that DOES allow for DVD burning when I place my order, but I'm not sure what the difference is between these two terms.

Your understanding is correct. Keep in mind that optical drives are usually upgradeable. A modern optical drive for notebook would also include -DL option
    for dual layer burning.

    You mean lightscribe.

The combo drives are simply dvd readers and cd burners. Definitely go for the DVD +R/-RW stuff.
