I've got some media CDR's from PNY that I've used countless times with several recorders and the DVD drive will not write to them. Keeps coming up with a power calibration error.

I've burned some DVD media with no issue, switched to another CDR media and that is burned just fine. Typically this error is because the laser can't focus correctly and requires a firmware upgrade. I can't find any information on this drive or any updates.

The drive is a slimtype DVD A DS8AZH

    Thoughts on this??

How old is the media? I have seen old media with degraded inks do the same thing. If the media will not write, but other media will, it is highly possible it is an issue with the discs themselves.

I'll get you a firmware updater tonight when I get home. I don't have the link here on my laptop though, sorry.

Since that fact, it leads me back to the notebook drive...... :)

go to start/computer then right click on your e drive, and select properties then the hardware tab. You should see the drive unit there. My whole computer is toshiba ( Toshiba DVD write drives are often labeled as TSSTcorp). You will also find the model # there. Pull it up and post it here and I'll get you the latest firmware update (if any is available) if you can't find it.

    Also, try this tool:

    http://hijacker.rpc1.org/discinfo/

I did a couple DVDs this evening ( I only use Taiyo Yuden Discs) and my TSST drive is nasty fast, and pretty darn clean judging by the verification scan.

Lemme finish loading Nero to my laptop. I can't remember if NERO tools will inform you of the disc drive info or not. Slimtype and slimline are generic references to the type of drive inserted in a laptop, to the best of my knowledge. I have researched the drive name and model you have listed and am drawing all blanks. I even asked at a DVD burning forum I frequent and am coming up with all blanks. Give me a bit of time I'll find a tool to open the access. You might try the doom9 forum too if want to do some research while I work on this. It is the only forum i can think of right now i haven't checked.

OK, Slimtype is the manufacturer of the drive. I could find no firmware updates for your drive, but I did find some issues with the Slimline drives not burning on DVD-R Media. Others have been able to burn but it took more than an hour to burn...

Here is a discussion about the drives. and a quick firmware list is located here. It appears that most of these users sent their units in and had the drives replaced and everything worked fine. Sadly, it appears as if it is simply the drive, not the firmware.

Contact HP support and tell them you want the drive replaced. I suspect that will fix the issue.

It seems that this dvd drive is a real POS.

I'm showing multiword dma udma mode 2. Should be ultra mode 2.......

Well I know it burns at 8x for dvds and with the right cdr also.......just sensative to media........ekkkkk

thanks for trying to help get this sorted....... :)

I'll give it some time maybe I'll get lucky and they'll come up with something...........then again maybe they won't........LOL

    Thanks again

    Chris

I don't consider myself lucky when I'm dropping that kind of coin on a piece of hardware.

As a technology nut, it just has to work..... ;)

well i paid more for a slower drive with software for LS when there is no LS drive installed lol at least u got a closer money's worth.

in the end quality discs shud always be used, theyre better guaranteed and last longer
