    Can you boot from the DVD drive?

    If you can, try deleting the upper and lower filters. For a script that will do this automatically, download:
    http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

    Run the EditReg.reg file first. This adds in a warning flag in the registry that will alert you whenever a registry script is being run. It makes your computer more secure.

    Then run the cdgone.reg file to clear out your upper and lower filters, reboot your computer, and the drive should be present again.

    If the drive isn't even bootable (or present in the BIOS), you may want to either reseat it or check with HP for a replacement drive.

    I had to do this just the other night and it worked. Seems like a problem in Vista where a DVD or CD write, etc program changes the registry entry...however, this work.

    Also, after you do this, if you use Itunes you'll get a "certificate error". Simply try to re-install Itunes then you'll get a menu that says "repair or uninstall"...Hit repair and you'll be up and running again.

    @mikelets456:

    It's not just a problem with Vista. This is a problem that iTunes is somewhat infamous for causing, and it's been happening since well before Vista. There are other programs that cause it, as well, but iTunes is the most high-profile by far.

    Yeah...I've never gotten a full explanation for WHY this happens, but a lot of programs that use the CD/DVD drive for anything besides playback (thus, ripping music, burning discs, etc...) store instructions in the upper and lower filters. If any one of these puts in a bad data bit, your drive disappears until you clear the upper and lower filters, which forces them to rebuild their libraries (usually they get it right the second time, fortunately).

    Hello all, I too was having this problem the topic creator described with my hp dv2000. I looked around the web and luckily found this thread. After running the script provided above my drive was finally detected by windows again. However, it still won't read any cds or dvds. I'm really not sure what to do at this point but any help would be appreciated.
