i own a HP N5430 laptop and the DVD drive that came with it has been acting up (not reading CD-R's)
i bought 2 different drives on ebay to replace it with. however, neither of them fit. both were advertised as "compatible" with HP notebooks, however, the "faceplate" of the new units either doesn't fit into the computer, or is such a tight fit, that the drive won't open (even with the help of a paperclip...)
i've already looked at trying to take off the face plate of the old oen and putting it on the new one, but the latches/pins on the faceplate don't seem to match...
the new drives are a teac and hitachi
thanks in advance!

You might try HP's spare parts depot - try calling their tech support/customer service and see if they can refer you to a person who can help you with your problem. You could also try looking around at NewEgg.com

i contacted them, but they want over $200 for a just a DVD-Rom...
that's why i opted to buy on ebay... -
Look for the same model at ebay so you could just use your old faceplate..that's what i did when my dvd writer stops reading n writing.

Be very careful with these claims from ebay. All DVD drives have the same connectivity on the back, but the faceplate is almost never the same. You have to check if the eject button and the LED are positioned at the same place.
If you got the wrong drive, you either have to live with it without any faceplate on it, or try to fit the one that came with it. Neither is recommended anyway
I suggest you buy a drive that was in a laptop similar to yours.
You have a N5430, *wild guess* get a drive that was in a N5xxx before.
I upgraded my v2000 with a dv4000 drive, the faceplates were not identical, but the locations of the button and the LED were exactly the same. -
My laptop has the same issue but with DVD's. Called HP and told them and they gave me a case # and said to ship it, for a free new drive replacement

Well basically ally laptop dvd/cd drive will work. Just find same model with ebay with what you have so you can just use the old faceplate. I have an old gcc-4040n and bought the same model at ebay. When i got it the faceplate is different but the latch is the same with my old one so i just switch them.
