My DV7T is not here yet, but I'd like to make a backup right away, so I can format and uninstall to get rid of the crap that's installed.

Do I need 4.3GB dvds or a DL?

Either one, but have extras on hand as the they don't always burn correctly.
I used the DL with one disc failure. You'll need a min. of 2 DL discs if you just want to go for it.

As long as the DVD isn't RW(rewritable) then it should burn without any issue. But the software is still a bit picky on the discs, so it isn't a bad idea as chetspecncer suggested to keep extra discs handy.

Don't even bother with the recovery disks. Mine took an hour before it asked me to put in the 2nd disc so I just cancelled and wiped the HD. My install was painless and I have no plans to ever install a bloatware infested version of Vista on my computer.

Sure, but if and when you want to sell your laptop or if you want to send the laptop back into HP for warranty service, then you are left with no way to put the system back to factory state without the restore DVD/partition.

You will need 3 single layered DVDs to backup the 12gb partition..
