I'm planning to get an HP notebook before the 20% discount coupon expires, but I wanted to know a bit about HP's dead pixel policy.
How many dead pixels would be required for an exchange? Does the area of the screen the dead pixels reside matter?

I've owned 4 different HP's the past 3 years and have yet to see ONE dead pixel. Maybe I'm lucky?

This article has a note in it saying "NOTE: This article does not pertain to the display hardware attached to notebook PCs." Maybe I'm the only one confused, does that mean it only pertains to external monitors, because it is an article only about monitors? Is there another article that references the 5 maximum dead pixels for panels in notebooks?

Yea...I was wondering about that too. I'm not too sure it pertains to notebook displays...
And I don't have any dead pixel issues. It's just that I'm afraid my screen will get unlucky and be unviewable or something -
The cahnces of you getting a laptop with dead pixels are very slim. i have had 4 hp laptops and 0 dead pixels -

For HP Thailand, only if you have atleast 4 dead pixel, they will replace the machine. So, i assume it's the same everywhere (for HP).
When I bought mine (dv2500t, dv2517tx to be exact), the saleslady told me to take a good inspection of the notebook at the place before I take it home, if there is any dead pixel, she will replace it, but if i take it home and later find less than 4 pixel, I won't be able to replace it.
Nice by the way, I don't have any problem so far other than the bloatware which i can easily get rid off. And it's the most beautiful laptop i've owned. I won't bother using deadpixel buddy or other program to find deadpixel, because if i can't see it with my naked eyes, why bother to go look for it. -
No other hardware issues of any kind either.

Each manufacturer has different policy.. some at 6-8 dead pixels. My Averatec had one and according to other owners of the same model their's had it on the same spot! I didn't really notice until someone mentioned it, now my eyes sometimes goes there. The best way to detect a hotspot is to make the screen all white and then all black. Dead pixels will pop out when these backgrounds are active.

When your new machine arrives down load "deadpixel buddy" -Google the name for a download site- If you have a problem return the machine in the 21 day window. My understanding is that pixel manufactuing defects usually are present "out of the box" and should not develop over the near term

I've had my nw8440 for about a year now. No dead pixels, but I have noticed some strange 'dirt spots' that appear to be dirt inside the LCD. There are a few isolated spots, but then there's a big cluster of them near the left edge of the LCD. Either that or they're 'dim' pixels. Anyone else experience this?
Of course, my display happens to be an infamous SEC one also...
