Are dead pixels an issue with the newer HP's? I have a two year old zt1175 that has been on the road most of it's life. The only problem I has was a bad screen wire harness. ($60.00 fix)

I've heard some of the newer Compaq/HP laptops have been showing up with pixels DOA. Is this true? Is this becoming an issue with HP?

It's not a issue specific to HP. It's everyone in general. Since LCD's now have more pixels per inch, some are bound to be bad from the LCD manufacturer. The XGA LCD's with a 1024x768 res has 786,432 pixels, but a system with a the same sized LCD can have an SXGA+ LCD which has a res of 1400x1050 has 1,470,000 pixels. I know there should be a level of quality control, but it's possible the LCD's tested for QC didn't have any problems.

Same here, I've had the N800c, N620c & the NX7000. All of which had no dead pixels. I even got replacement units for the N620c & the NX7000 also without problems.

Don't think there are any particular issues. My Compaq, with its UXGA screen (1600 x 1200) had no dead pixels, or at least none that I could notice these past 2 years.

Pretty good for 2002 isn't it?

I will be new to notebooks when I finally decide on a unit. In the HP category, I'm looking at the zt3000 and the nx7010.

How will I know if it has dead pixels?

I saw one post said it was colors like bright green or red. I would think it would be just a black hole.

Please help so I will know when my notebook comes.

    Thanks.

it depends on how exactly the pixel fails. it may either be a black hole, or it may light up in a specific color like red, etc.

you'll know it when you see it.

Spets is correct, there's no guarantee what colour your dead pixel will be, but the best way to test it would be to switch your background colour to all white then all black. Make sure you disable all wallpapers before doing this. If, after changing the color, you don't see any brighter or darker pixels, then you're fine.

I'd never recommend contacting tech support for repairs to an HP or Compaq unit if dead pixels were involved. Just take it into a service center and have them do the repairs. It's a lot easier to get it fixed there than it is to get it authorized via HP Support in my experience.

I received my second zt3000 today(first one was returned). At first sight, I felt like the screen quality of this new one is not as good as the previous one. Pictures in internet explorer does not look good. I can notice some horizontal lines, and those pictures do not look like in good resolution. That remind me of the topic in which somebody was mentioning that HP uses 2 different brand of screens. May be this difference that I notice(there is no very obvious difference but I can feel some difference).

Secondly, I wanted to check for dead pixels. At first with white background color, I couldn't notice anything. Then I switched the backgroud color to black and I can notice very very little dots(pixels) that are shiny(you can see white color(or green, blue) through these pixels. I could caunt around 7-8 such pixels distributed on the screen. According to the explanation, I guess those are dead(or somehow defective) pixels. I guess I am going to return it soon!

the new one may come with non-dead pixel screen, but who can guarantee that the screen will as good as the that of my first zt3000[ :(]
