I'm looking for a laptop with > WXGA resolution, and both the newer Dv7t and the HDX16t appeal to me, so I'm hoping someone who has seen both of them can help me by answering some questions. (Sorry if any of these question have come up before, but without the search feature I haven't been able to find anything.)

    1) I've seen a few references to the 4650 in the Dv7 getting pretty hot. Is it really noticeable ? Does it only come into play if you're gaming, or will it get hot even if you're browsing the web? It will be used as an actual laptop sometimes, so I don't want anyone's leg to catch fire. Does the 16 run any cooler? Is there any temp difference between the 9600m and the 130m GPUs in the 16?
    2) How does the build quality compare between the two? I haven't seen much about the newer Dv7's, but I've seen a few complaints about HDX16's that have bulges around the media bar at the top (I think). On the other hand, there seem to be more refurbished Dv7's around, which doesn't seem like a good sign.
    3) How do the screens compare? I'd be getting the 1920x1080 on the 16,
how do people find the size of the text with that resolution? I've seen a few complaints about the colors being washed out on the Dv7, and that the led lighting almost makes it too bright. How does the screen look on the 16?

    Thanks for any help,
    Andrew

I don't have experience with the dv7 so I'll only comment on the hdx16.

    1. The 130M gpu in the hdx16 is simply an updated 9600m. It is only 17% more powerful due to its 1GB ram and smaller circuit die. Because of the smaller die, its runs cooler than the 9600m. If you play a high demanding game such as Crysis warhead for about 2 hours, it will get very hot. But if you're just web browsing etc, its ok. However, you must consider your specs. Mine has the fastest HDD drive and fastest cpu, thus contributing to heat.

    2. I've had 2 hdx16s in my hands and the 1st one had a noticeable bump in the smart touch bar where the mute button was. My replacement does not have this but fit and finish is lacking on the top right speaker grill area. It doesn't fit flush with the body. However, overall build quality is acceptable.

    3. The 1920X1080 screen is beautiful. However, it does make everything look microscopic such as webpage text, desktop icons etc. But I've gotten used to it and actually prefer it to my Toshiba low res. screen now. Also you can manually decrease the resolution making things look bigger.
