First off - I have read through a ton of the posts in these forums to try to answer this question and would like to know people's opinions.

I see such pros for each, that I could go either way. Blueray, huge screen, speed, ability to use SSD and HD, for the 17. Lighter, still powerful, better battery life for the 14.

If they cost exactly the same, which would you pick and why?

I game a lot less than I used to. I wanted something portable, with good battery life, and a high resolution screen, as well as having a decent discrete video card in case I do feel like a bit of gaming on the side.

The Envy 17 gets pretty terrible battery life, but it's a desktop replacement, so you really have to expect that.

The Envy 14 gets decent battery life, so the choice was pretty clear to me.

Simply put, if you want something more portable, for use on the go, get the 14. If you want something more powerful, that can be carried around but not necessarily used much on the go, go with the 17.

Well, I think the new BCB 10% just sealed it - the 17 from Newegg is $150 or so less than building it through HP, plus no tax, and now with 10% back - I can pretty much order a OCZ SSD for free..
