Well I bought the HP-DV9428 a few weeks ago and its driving me up the wall with SLOW boot up, SLOWER shut down and SLOWEST OF ALL the recovery from hibernation.

In some cases it appears the laptop has basically frozen in the above states so im then forced to hold down the down button and then restart and then of course I get the black screen saying that Windows was not shut down correctly.

I seem to be having problems that other owners are having based on reviews which can be seen here http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...at0502003&type=product&tab=7&id=1180743304715

A few minutes ago I closed the lid so that I could move the laptop it took me seconds to move and upon opening the lid it just showed a black screen for a LONG time. A video that took me 4 hours was loading and im pissed that I have to now wait for the video to load again.

    This is totally unacceptable.

Does anyone have any ideas aside from downgrading to Xp?

Hmm, I wonder why all these people are having problems with boot time, I bought a Dv9543cl at Costco and it always boots in under 1 min. The specs are 2.0ghz 5400rpm 320gb (160gb x 2 dual HD) 2 gb of RAM

Personally I would return that one if I were you, there must be some kind of internal problem with the HDD or the processor. (Srry for double posting.)

Uxion I agree but being abroad now that is not an option.

I removed a lot of bloatware and removed several things from the startup through microsoft config and the start up and stut down has been better. Thanks Lithus for your suggestions.

Now my laptop is freezing and I now have to manually turn it off by turning off the power button.

Also IE is giving me loads of problems always saying IE has encountered a problem and needs to shutdown.

In addition today I left the computer on with the lid up and when I returned I saw the Microsoft Vista black screensaver when I touched the touchpad it prompted be for a password and when it started up it said the computer had just recovered from an unexpected shutdown.

I had four videos donwloading 50 minutes each!!!!

    WTF is going on here.

I didnt spend over a grand to have to deal with these issues every day.

    Im frustrated.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

-Do a clean install. That will probably solve your problems

If that doesnt work.. exhange/refund.. probably faulty hardware or bogged up OS

    Try defragging the drive aswell

Here are some steps to take:
    1. Download speedfan and let us know what the temperatures are that it reports to you
    2. Use the "Memtest86+" guide in my sig to test the RAM in your system. Problems like that could be caused by bad RAM.
    3. If you haven't made your recovery discs, you should do that now if you can
    4. If you haven't found the problem so far, BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA.
    5. Try to perform a recovery from your recovery discs. This will cause all of your data to be erased, so back it up first.
    6. If that doesn't help, then a clean install would be the next thing. Make sure you made the recovery discs and save c:\swsetup if you can before you do that. Follow the clean install guide in my sig.
    7. If the clean install or full recovery doesn't help, then it's hardware. Bad RAM is relatively easy to fix, but if it's anything else it will need to go to HP for repair.

orev, I will defintely try what you have suggested and when I do I will report back here.

I couldnt get Word to open it was seemingly timing out so I had to restart. It seems every day brings another problem with this laptop.

Thanks again for all the replies, they are appreciated.

I'd be interested to hear if you've had any success. I also experience frequent lock-ups where the only recourse is to forcibly reboot. I called this in to HP support once, was given a link to update the BIOS, but that BIOS update was unavailable. When it works, its great, but freezing every few hours isn't acceptable. Wish I had purchased the extended warranty now.

You have a 1 year warranty, so you should still be able to get it repaired (unless you bought it a while ago, obviously). HP support isn't really helpful for stuff like this, I would recommend that you start a new thread on the forum describing exactly your problems, and maybe we can help you.
