I recently bought an HP laptop and everytime I hit the delete key, I am typing a period instead. How do I fix this issue?

Try going to regional and languages in con pan then language and details, see if you have the correct language set, you might of hot keyed a change. If you don't get any joy there try a system restore to an earily time.

The correct language was set. Just recently, like an hour ago, I just set all my pictures the way I wanted and installed several software. If I do a system restore, won't I lose everything that I just did? And what good would a system restore do if I just bought the laptop 4-5 days ago?

A system restore isn't the same thing as a system recovery. System restore points are set by the OS or by you manually to help correct for this type of problem.

If your 'delete' key was working as it should before the last round of software installs and picture editing, and you select a 'restore point' that has a time before those changes, your delete key should be returned to working status.

Yes, you would lose the work you just did.

    Edit:
I just saw that you have a DV7. That has a num pad and you are probably using the Del key on the num pad. If so, you have num lock ON. Turn if OFF and your delete key will return to Delete mode instead of Period.

You'd just save whatever data you processed onto a USB flash drive, then re-upload them to HDD after any such retsore, plus did you look in key setting on the language tab for what dee stated?
