Hey guys, new here. I have a 6710b which just crapped out on me, the power jack died. I assume....that it was because of the charger (universal) that I got with the PC from a friend. I have a charger for my old laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000) and the plug fits into the 6710b, will this work or will it burn out my new 6710b (which is being taken care of via warranty) The specs of the charger are.....:

    65W-AC ADAPTER
    MODEL: HPOQ065B83 REV A01
    INPUT: 100-240V - 50-60Hz 1.5A
    OUTPUT: 19.5V---3.34A

Not sure on the power specs of the PC itself, hopefully this is where you guys could help me out. I'm really in a bind here and would like to avoid spending the 75+ dollars HP wants for a new charger. Not to mention, I've heard some bad things about the HP chargers for a while now.

    Thanks in advance, Jake

According to HP's maintenance manual for the 6710B (which can be read here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...=321957&prodSeriesId=3356620&lang=en&cc=us#6), the input power spec is:

    Input power
    Operating voltage 19.0 V dc @ 4.74 A – 90 W
    Operating current 4.74 A

1/2 a volt will likely not make a difference but the Dell power adapter is limited in the current it supplies (it is over 1amp less). Some Dell laptop have two adapters, one 65W (doesn't get quite as hot) and one 90W for faster charging. Their laptop can use either adapter. I'm not able to find the same information about the HP.

If the polarity is the same for both power adapters, you can test it out. I think the worse that would happen is that there is not enough current to power the laptop and charge the battery at the same time.

I've seen advertised replacement power adapter for the 6710B that has slightly lower voltage 18.5 but a lot more current (6.5amp, 120 watts!).

    Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Gnimble, quick question...what exactly do you mean by polarity? Do you mean the small diagram with the pluses and minuses on the AC brick itself? Thanks, Jake

    Thanks, Jake
