This thing gets up to 81 degs C. Only 3 vents on the bottom and hot air blows out the back. the rear vent is actually a crappy design as it is partially blocked because the laptop has no feet for elevation.

here's a pic of the bottom borrowed from another thread. the dv7 is on the left:

I haven't a clue which way the air flows on this thing.

I'm thinking of the Zalman 2000 or the NZXT Cryo cooler series

the other problem is i use the laptop on my lap with knees up. I have to cross my legs without a cooler to keep that rear exhaust fan clear. I need a cooler that won't block that fan.

does anyone have a cooler that gives good performance with the dv7?

I've read the reviews and cooling central. not real helpful, b/c i as i said, i haven't a clue about the air flow on this.

Appreciate any responses. I'm ready to buy tonight, if someone has a dv7 and has a cooler that drops more than 2 degs. 81 degs is smoking on this thing. It had an AMD chip which i know runs hotter, but this is ridiculous. I usually keep it plugged in all the time, because battery life isn't very good on performance power plan. I need full LCD brightness on this thing, because the screen isn't stellar.

    thx

ps - the other thing that it must have is a way to keep the laptop from sliding off. i can see that the zalman 2000 has a strip for this. not sure how useful it is??

I'm not seeing anything on the NZXT Cryo to hold the laptop in place.

    thx

Hey Bro. Well I have a dv7 and i use the NZXT Cryo on it, however I have never tried using it n my lap. Have you tried undervolting to cool it down a little too? I agree the dv7 doesn't seem to have the best venting, but with undervolting I dropped my temsp around 10C. Link - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824

The dv7 sucks air into the small vent on the bottom at the back and then exhausts it out the rear. So a cooler that blows up at the bottom is best. The front and middle vents are really just strips of aluminum that allow heat to bleed out, they dont actually have air flowing through them.

    Hope this helps.

thank you samiur. i don't know how to underclock other than with notebook hardware control and it doesn't work with vista. i'll check out your link to see how you do it. that is an amazing drop in temps.

does the NZXT raise it up enough to give good air flow for that rear fan?

i'm idling here at 72, just surfing the web. i need to reduce these temps badly.

    thx again

i got RM clock to load on vista x64, but there are no advanced cpu settings. for some reason it doesn't seem to indentify my amd turion chip.

any other undervolting utility that will work?

here's a scr shot. thx for your help!

So what? My dv7 runs that hot and ill sit it on my bed itll hit 90°C its designed to run that hot. I dont worry about heat unless its affecting preformance.

Tippy I don't mean to be rude, but that just sounds like a totally ignorant statement. It is affecting performance (lockups-graphics jitter, etc)

I finally found some data from AMD. (attached). And a google search of this chip, showed the the high temps were from an adjusted power scheme in Vista. I turned it back to HP Recommended Power settings and viola! Temps dropped 10 degs within a minute.

I'm still going to get the cooler, so i don't block the vents. if the NZxt cRYO has the airflow i need (upper left and center - ram gets hot) then I'll go with that.

The NZXT has three 120 mm fans that cool the upper half of the notebook..i.e. it blows air right into the intake fan vent on the bottom of the notebook and cools it well. Like I said before I can't comment on how well it sits in your lap as I use mine on a desk for when Im gaming. The NZXT does not cool the HDD very well as it is below the left palmrest (at least on my dv7t), but I would think yours is in the same place. It is a very heavily built cooler and weighs a good amount. Pretty much solid aluminum with rubber strips on top to raise the lappy and keep it from sliding around. Oh and on some reviews from Newegg, I have seen some buyers state that their NZXT came witht he fans sucking air down, instead of blowing it up, however they were able to switch the fans around. Hope this helps.

I used to have the NZXT on my DV7T when I had it and it worked and fit very well.

Mine came blowing air up into the intakes, I don't really think it would be comfortable using it on your lap because the weight isn't distributed across your legs as well. ie, only the front and the back of the cooler touch your legs and take all the weight.

I wouldn't listen to Tippey - if you feel its running hot cool that off with the NZXT

thx guys. i was worried about the weight on my lap also. this laptop is heavy as it is.

my hd never heats up. its a steady 36 deg. after changing the power scheme and seeing massive drops, i'm going to hold off a bit on a cooler, since it's not critical now. soaring in the 80's was a bit much. about as bad as my old pos acer 5672 that i retired to get this.

haven't tried any graphics intensive games yet with the new power scheme yet, so i'll see how much it climbs then.

thx VERY much for the vent/fan config and recommend for the NZXT. that will be the one i'll get.

samiur i also read about reversing the fans on newegg. sounds like it's quality built and easily modified. the old laptop cool2 that i used on 2 old laptops has a cheap plastic connection at the power connector that isn't solderable and the fans skip on/on. just don't want to deal with that quality again. the nzxt sounds like it's well built.

    appreciate it
