Hello all, I got my DV6 and the first thing I did was to do a clean install according to this guide here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/432564-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html

However, after the clean install, I try to reactivate win7 using the programme provided in the link and it didn't work. Now, my Win7 is supposedly inactivated, and it prompts me for a key every time I start up.

I tried entering the key (on the sticker at the back of the notebook) using the anytime upgrade programme, but the key seems to be not suitable for upgrade?

    Can anyone help?

Open the start menu, type in "activate" and hit enter. If your windows isn't in english, replace activate with your local version.

First it tries to activate online and fails, then it should allow you to enter another (the sticker) key.

If key hasen't been used before, it probably fails first online activation and you might need to call the activation number. It's normal and one of those piracy prevention thingys. When the phone activation asks, correct answers are "this is the original computer" "this is only computer with same key". Next time that key should activate over internet normally as it is then tied to your laptop.

Ok, I shall try that. Is there any way to avoid the phone activation process?

It's only a machine and there should be a toll-free option where to call.

Oem stickers used to activate over the internet but it was removed almost 10 years ago. Thank the pirates who sold those branded stickers ripped from new computers with whitebox computers.

Second time it should activate online.

What kind of edition did you install? And what edition that your key is for?

You cannot put in a Home Premium edition key on a Professional edition install.

Also, I think you are supposed to enter the product key under the enter product key in system properties, not in the anytime upgrade.

If you have a newer machine from HP, you could also rerun the recovery and choose "Minimized System Image" it will perform a recovery without the bloatware. If you continue to have issues with activation you could also order a new recovery diskset from HP that will also fix it.

I`d do a factory restore again. Are you using the recovery image on the computer itself or do you have it on a disc or something?

Otherwise give HP a call. Maybe someone has shared your windows key and it has been deactivated by HP.

    Take care,
    Shannon

If it doesn't validate online then just call the number, it'll activate it for you. It only takes less than 5 minutes.

Had the same Problem with my dv7, I bought a Spanish edition (win 7 and keyboard in Spanish). Formated the laptop and installed the Win home pre. Laptop had Home pre installed. Mistake i made was i used a win 7 HOME PRE that was sp1. that's a no no. I had to install an original copy of windows that's was not service pack 1, activated it on line then i updated it to SP1.
