Did anyone NOT get defects on an HP 9000/6000? I'm scared...

I was so close to ordering either a new custom DV6700 or 9700 yesterday.

Prices were amazing too, with the NB1399 coupon code. You can get some awesome specs for under $1000. I mean really nice!

But after reading this board, all I see are horrible stories about problems and defects. So I never ordered. And in honesty, I looked at Dells too, but the same thing is true there, all sorts of defects. Plus I like HP designs more.

Does anyone NOT have problems or defects on their 6000 or 9000 series HP???

I just really want something that works and I can rely on. Will I not get that with HP???

I've only had my 9500T for less than a week, but I'll keep you updated. I have read the horror stories as well, which is why I haven't sold my old laptop (also an HP that is still running strong after 5 years).

if you looking for better gaming notebook so go a head for dell XPS 1530 with better graphic card not present in hp.
then i didnt see in the forum defects in this series(xps 1530) as i saw in dell inspiron & vostro!
in generaly hp defects less than Dell defects!

Remember, you hear about problems on the forum whereas the ones without probems probably don't post. I bet there are FAR more HP/Compaqs that are doing just fine like mine did.

I had an HP Pavilon 5000 notebook for a year... no problems whatsoever.
Liked it so well, I bought an HP Compaq Presario v6000 7 months ago and love it... not one single problem. Performs fabulousy.

I bought my dv6000t the first night they were available a year + 4 months ago and I haven't had one issue.

The reason you here all these horror stories is because the only people that are posting here are those that have had problems, and thus took out the time to search for help and ended up here.

    Im on my fourth HP dv9000 model (2 dv9000's, 3rd dv9500)...

1st dv9000 had a defective touchpad out of the box. Replaced with 2nd dv9000.
2nd dv9000 worked for 8 months, then had the infamous LCD screen split. A couple tech support jobs later and my laptop had more problems than before the LCD split. HP replaced it with a dv9500.
1st dv9500 worked great, then i accidentally spilled liquid on it. HP fixed it for a price, but they caused problems and they replaced it.
2nd dv9500 is working fine so far...

It's really hard to say what the ratio of people with defects and those without them are. As people said, most people here have complaints. HOWEVER, you could say that about any forum here, so you'll just have to decide for yourself.

Like I said on another topic, HP's have a serious problem, and that's their malfunctioning power jacks. Google, "power jack problem" and you'll find that HP is prevalent in this area. This happened to me a year after purchase and completely grounded my ability to use my notebook. I have similar price ranged Dell's and Sony's where I live, and I have to say, while I like the HP design, those are much more solidly built and less flimsy.

The only gripe I have with HP all the time is dead pixels. 4/6 HP notebooks I've owned in the past few years all arrived with 1-2 dead pixels.

I had one dead pixel on mine, but honestly, it didn't bother me much. I can see why it would bother others though.

    Yeah, that has me concerned.

I've spent the past 2 days looking at notebooks in stores and reading these forums, and I STILL have no idea what to buy.

Everytime I think I like something, it has some serious problem. The HP's and Dells have all sorts of quality issues, the Sony's have battery problems, the Apples are way too expensive for what you get IMO, the Toshibas... I don't know much about them but they might be OK. I still have Gateway to look at, but I have a feeling they'll be bad.

I really, really HATE buying a new computer. :(

I'll just tell you that my favorite now is Sony. But that could change any time; it used to be HP, for example. I'm not sure about Toshiba, because I think the thing is that less people use those, so less complaints are made.

I've had this dv9500 for almost 3 months now and I haven't had any issues with it that I couldn't fix. I know some people have had some really bad luck but like its already been said, you usually hear the bad a lot more than the good.

Did it come complete with their rootkit? :D Sorry I couldn't help myself hehe, I still refuse to buy anything Sony after their lack of poor judgment *cough* or ethics *cough*.

Well, like he said, all companies have their individual problems. I would rather have that than a busted power jack.

My DV9500t had no problems out of the box. I was even all set to switch out Vista for Xp, but after trying Vista I cannot go back to XP (if you want a more detailed reason, please tell me I will be happy to tell you my story). Anyhoo, the only problem I had with this notebook out of the box was the touchpad buttons were a tiny bit crooked and the screen is a bit difficult to open/close. I have to press down on the release/open button really hard to get it to open or close. These are things I can live with though. So far, this machine has exceeded all of my expectations.

Considering I didn't read any of the posts and only the subject header, here is my response.

Most people will only post the bad things about their computer and people rarely post the good things. Why? I don't know.

I will have had my dv6000t one year on Christmas. The fan is a little louder then I would like, but other then that I have had no problems at all. The screen is awesome, the build quality is good (for a consumer level notebook), and my power jack has been problem free.

ethant, that's good to hear. I've gone back and forth between so many notebooks but I keep looking back to HP because I like the keyboards (better than Sony) and the price/value ratio is amazing with that current $500 coupon.

I may just go for the 9700T since I read it has less fan noise, and I mainly plan to use it at home I think...

i just bought a 17" dv9700... i hope mine doesnt have any problems. i am looking forward to receiving it, it has very cool specs and was a pretty decent price. 1062 shipped/tax for the computer with t7250, 2gb, 1650x1050 screen, 8600m gs, 120x2 hard drives at 7200rpms!

my old dell was stolen, and with the hp coupon floating around i could not help myself. a similar dell was in the 2500 price range.

Last 4 laptops over the past 10 years for me and my immediate family have all been HP/Compaq laptops.

Last 2 being dv9000t and dv9500t (got 2 weeks ago). Both go through heavy use as wonderful mce/TV entertainment centers in studio apartments. (Only occasionally moved around.) They are excellent all around entertainment units for a rock bottom price and do well as all-in-one portable mid-level desktop replacements.

Really love the HP digital TV tuners. And the built in altec lansing speaker sound quality can't be beat. And as an unexpected bonus, HP throws in a small multi-media remote control that can be stored in the PCI-express slot.

    Just got my first laptop....dv6500t

All I've found so far that I don't like is the stupid power jack issue. Good thing I got the warranty and hopefully HP won't need the thing for too long to fix the problem.

The power jack issue was on my cousin's Dell, so it's not just HP that has issues with power jacks...

I just opened up my dv9644ca and everything seems to be working fine. no crashes, no rattling optical drive or anything. The speakers sound good at max. doesn't seem to get to warm, and its just a nice notebook. Even the small remote works nicely

Why? Well, who the hell (except us, dark blue guys) would frequent forums proclaiming "hey dudes! everything's fine!!!"?

First year failure rate of laptops is around 15%. All of the mainstream brands fall quite squarely around that average. Power jack issues tend to be a universal problem, and are exacerbated as the laptop ages.

I've owned my DV9030 for one year. I'm on my third keyboard. On the first keyboard, a key popped off that I had never even used after about a week of owning it. The enter key on the replacement keyboard quit working after a few days, so the second keyboard had to be replaced. This all happened within two months of owning it. Just recently, I had to have it shipped back to HP because the hinges got really loose. They replaced the whole lid since it was under warranty. It's now out of warranty and the DVD drive makes a horrible rattling noise. The power jack is also starting to get loose. After my experience with this computer, I will probably stay away from HP in the future.

I got a dv9030us from Circuit City almost two years ago. For almost two years, I've had no complaints. I did replace a power brick, but I also crushed the cord repeatedly in the footrest of my barcolounger, so I can't complain there.

However, after almost two years, it bit the big one, probably from doing hard time with my 8 year old, and I didn't get the extended warranty. There is physical damage to the hinge near the K-lock, such that the lid won't close easily, and when it does, I get chips of black plastic for the effort. I pried off the "V" key to get something out from under it, and destroyed it. And the graphics "died" - the screen is covered with snow and resets constantly. I can use it in safe mode for very short periods, but its a boat anchor at this point.

So, what did I do? I bought a new one! :)

I bought the dv9830us. I was delighted to find that instead of dual 160g drives, it has one 320g drive, and an empty bay. So I was able to move the D: drive from my 9030us into the empty bay and suck off all my data.

So far, I love it, but then, I loved the 9030us, and they are virtually indistinguishable (although the 9830 seems a little more solid).

I hate Vista, but lets not go there.

I only have one complaint: when I touch the volume slider, a massive window that says "volume" pops up on top of everything, and the entire system hangs while the volume is adjusted. Note, however, that this isn't a millisecond affair. It seems as if a touch on the volume control requires about three to four seconds to process, and it also appears that there is some "bounce", such that a single tap results in what seems to be three or four taps, all taking several second each, and the system is completely unresponsive while this is happening.

I suspect if I could find a way to disable the visual confirmation, the problem MIGHT go away. But I've scoured the HP web site, and there is no indication that they've heard of, much less solved, this problem.

I really hate to do it, but if I can't get it resolved, I may take it back for a replacement, as I'm concerned there may be a physical defect involved.

Anyone see this sort of bizarre behavior? I used to have a problem on the 9030us where the caps lock key would display a huge, ugly green confirmation everytime it was tapped (but it didn't hang the system - it just freaked out the graphics a little), but I eventually managed to turn it off in the media center settings (IIRC). I can't find a similar control under the Vista media center.

Anyone have a similar problem? Anyone solve it?

    Jim

Uninstall HP's Quicktouch software. That's all it seems to do: Give you visual and audio feedback when you change the volume. It wasn't even factory-installed on my 9650.

Well, these are horror stories. The only problem I had with mine was with the Display. I don't remember how it happened exactly, all I remember is that I took out the battery and pressed the power button for 10 sec and then everything was alright. That's the only hardware relate issue I've had.

I've had my laptop for one year now. And I'm very happy with it. My specs are in my sig.

You don’t have to uninstall any software to get rid of the on screen Volume Display.

    1. Click the Vista start icon, bottom left.
    2. Type RUN in the Start Search box, ENTER.
    3. Type MSCONFIG in the OPEN: area, Click OK.
    4. Click on Continue if asked.
    5. Select the StartUp Tab in the System Configuration menu.
    6. Remove the checkmark from the HP Quicktouch On Screen Display item.
    7. Click on OK and Restart if required. You are done.

Reverse above procedure to restore to original if desired.

If people just would do a fresh install of Vista (or better, use XP) they wouldn't have half the problems that are being complained about. It's rather unfortunate that HP (and other OEMs) ruin the great hardware they create with horrible software, but that's just how it is.
