This feels like a dumb question but I just don't know the difference between these models.. besides cost.
-
Difference is processors I think (AMD vs Intel).
-
z for AMD, t for Intel
-
redrazor11 Formerly waterwizard11
z has AMD + ATI
t has INTEL + Nvida
generally the z is cheaper. You get more for your money
But the t is the better preformer...and gets better battery life. -
sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
they both have newer technology processors
Dv5z has AMD PUMA
Dv5t has Centrino 2 intel processor
The difference is that Centrino 2 is *aside from being intel, lol* more power efficient, smaller depending on one you choose, and faster (a bit) at multitasking. -
dv5z uses AMD's PUMA platform.
dv5t uses Intel's Montevina platform. (Centrino 2)
So, if you like AMD, go with dv5z. If you like Intel, go with dv5t.
But, dv5z is much cheaper. -

If you aren't on a pretty strict budget I would say go for the Dv5t because of the reasons stated above.
-
Don't you mean dv5z shoelace?
The dv5t is more expensive.

dv5z has a way better integrated GPU and no Intel marketing tax, dv5t gets a little better battery life.
-
About how much more battery life does the dv5t get?
-
"The dv5t comes with a 55-Wh (six-cell) battery, which drained in 3 hours 12 minutes, according to the MobileMark 2007 test."

So in other words it's battery life is about an hour better in comparison with the HP dv5z -
In trade of you get worse IGP performance, unless battery life is really a deal breaker, I'd say go for the Z, the AMD cpu is more than efficiency of most task.
-
Can someone post reviews from battery tests for both, preferably from the same site?

And the battery tests for the HP dv5z are on this website (it's actually on the same website as this discussion is)

It's too bad that Notebookreview has not done a review of the dvV5t, then we would have a valid comparison between the Puma and Centrino 2 platforms with everything else being equal.
But based on what I have read, IMO it boils down to
Centrino 2
-better CPU (faster)
- better battery life
Puma
- better graphics (HD3200 vs X4500) - guessestimate on my part since I have not seen any feedback on X4500 - We know that the HD3200 is awesome for a IGP.
- better price - $100 - $200 based on the configuration
Question, if you got the $29 upgrade to the high capacity 6 cell for the dv5z, would that make it equivalent to the dv5t in terms of battery life. Then, the only advantage of the dv5t would be the faster processor -
dv5t and dv5z also differ in terms of the consumer base it is targetting. the dv5z seems to be more geared towards standard everyday computing and light gaming, and offers a pretty cost effective solution for that. the dv5t, with the penryn processors and the 9600GT, is more for moderate gaming at a reasonable price.
