I'm a little confused. Compaq was absorbed by HP, right? So they are now both HP? I've heard lots of great things about the reliability and solid performance of HP notebooks, does this count for HP Compaq notebooks too? Is there a large difference in quality, are they made by different companies?

I am confused. [xx(] Perhaps someone can explain the business relationship?

They are really just two brands now. Compaq is more business and HP is more consumer. You'll see mild hardware differences, but the most obvious divergence is in design. The cases, button placements and such are fairly unique to each brand.
