So yea since the new envy is coming out and possibly increase of prices makes me think of getting a envy 17 instead of the 3d version in the future. 3D is nice and all but prob not ready for a laptop which sometimes find games in 2d hard to handle. I got the 3d version at first only due to the fact that there was no price difference.

Now back to topic, is there any actual difference between 1080p envy 17 screen and 1080p envy 17 3d screen? Only difference I found on file is one says 3d and other don't. I know 3d one is 120hz how about the normal one? Cant find any info on that.

    Thanks :)

I would assume the other one is 60hz but could be wrong..I mean there's nothing else required to make it 3d so I don't see why they would change anything else

Well, it seems to only be a difference in displays. I've posted before how if anyone who has an Envy 17 3D, to look under the base. Notice in white paint, it clearly says Envy 17.... That is all...not Envy 17 3D. So it seems the majority of components in and out are basically an Envy 17 with a upgraded display of 120hz and infared to work with the 3D shutter glasses....

Hope they offer a 120hz screen for the 17 version, altho im not sure how much better is the 120 hz compared to the 60 hz as I only used 120hz with the 3d version. Is there any difference in 2d viewing? I really dont care about 3d now.

Few days ago I started playing lost planet 2 and been only getting around 25-30 fps with high setting on DX9, and with a unbelievable 8fps on DX11. I dont see how it is gonna handle 3d gaming at high quality when its struggling with 2d :(

Take your V Sync of and turn down your Anti-Aliasing. I have yet to run a game under 55 FPS including Splinter Cell and Mass Effect 2 1080P 3D. So im not sure whats up with some of you guys claiming this thing can't handle gaming.

    This thing is beast...

    I have the Envy 3D 17 BTW.

I can even run my Wii Emulator at full speed.

the 3d display is also super bright compared to the 60hz regular version. Trust me, I owned both and the 3d screen is awesome. better than any desktop monitor i've ever owned in fact.

!!!! OMG  I have had the same issue... I just tried the Lost Planet 2, and on DX11 I get about 8 to 11 FPS  I am thinking you and me might have super underclocked GPUs.... by the way, how much CPU RAM do you have? I have max at 8GIG.... and yeah, I took off Vsync and AA....weird.....

I propose we make a chart of all the settings with AA, Some AA, full AA, other tweaks, and at different resolutions with various games. If we make this chart and compare we can better get an idea of what the deal is...and also when we get the new refresh Envy 17 3D we can re run the tests again and see if there is a difference.

I am wondering if some people's GPUs are clocked differently.

Wait! Is there a download I can use to actually test the real clock speed of the GPU? That would be priceless. Sorry, I am not a techie so I have to ask. Thanks.

Oh? I thought GPU-Z only tells you the the temps of the GPU... so it also gives you the actual clock speed? And this you run while playing the game I suppose?

Update: Yeah, Just downloaded GPU-Z on my dv7-4183cl. Pretty simple to use. Thanks. Do I run it while playing games or that's not needed?

for my dv7 GPU clock is 372MHz, memory 541MHz DDR3..... so is GPU clock the important part I should be looking at? What is the Envy 17 3D expected GPU clock? ahhah I feel like I'm learning all this now...

really? I thought the graphics were ok in cut scenes, but overall I did not like the feel of the game. I prefer shooters like Quake II, COD series, Metro2033...a bit weird too, lol....Battlefield is cool...etc... I have the i7 840 8gig...so shelling out an extra 1,000 bucks does nothing to improve games frame rate....just need a better GPU

Update: Just downloaded and tried GPU-Z on my Envy 17 3D and I want to cry. :( Why in the world is my GPU clock only at 500MHz? Is this normal on everyone else's Envy 17 3D? I have the i7-840qm with 8gig of ram...this really sucks. I've read on other forums how other companies have allowed users to overclock their HD 5850 in the 800s..... I'm jealous.

Does anyone know if its physically possible to take out the HD 5850 from the Envy and put in an HD 6970? Will it even work? I will wait for the refresh which gets a 6850...so I want to possibly swap that out for the 6970

No. It's soldered in. 500mhz is the correct underclocked......clock.

use the MSI afterburner tool, I think that works. You can overclock your card with that. E.g. the envy 14 5650 runs at 450 I upped to it 500 base.

But I think other threads here mentioned how HP locked the BIOS of the GPU? so we can't mess with it. You want to tell me, HP did not lock the BIOS of the Envy 14 GPU? If so why not, and why only the Envy 17 3D which people buy for its possibilty and promise of power..sheesh...

I think others tried MSI and such without success, but if you know it works I will try it thanks.

Oh, and thanks Orange Canary and armoured too.

I think you have to change the values in Msi afterburner to 1 or 0, Im not quite sure. You can find some guides of it on google im sure, but better yet there will be people who know how to do it.

:EDIT: the envy 14 was overclockable because it wasn't soldered or whatever you want to call it. You can overclock the 5650 on 14, but not on the 17.
    good luck joe!

    Also quick-side question here:

I bought 3 years warranty with HP, my envy 14 has CPU whine when I plug my mouse in, has keyboard flex a bit of screen flex and Im a bit scared ill mash a hole through my keyboard soon. I have a radiance screen so would they replace it with a radiance screen? Im crossing my fingers to get a refreshed one if possible.

well I finished lost planet 2 on normal and thought to change the game up a bit so I got Mafia 2 to try out. And guess what? It runs 18-25fps with 1080p no vsync no AA shadow on low. The lag is very noticeable. So either something is wrong with my laptop or the gpu, o well at least im returning it soon
