Hi all,
i am interested in purchasing one of these models, but i am not sure what are the differences, except for the GPU.
Thanks in advance for your help![]()

They are the same exact notebook, except for the GPU so you're thoughts are correct. Unless you use CAD tools and similar, I'd say get the 'p'.

The W also has a better warranty, 3/3/3 not 3/3/0.

I don't really care about the blueray but i'd like to get all the options like bluetooth, N wireless card etc
So i've tried to configure a p version like this

So basically is the same price for a very similar configuration, but apparently the second one has more than 500 $ of discount, i mean the difference in the value is due only to the GPU?
Is the NVDIA on the second so much better than the ATI on the first?
And what is the difference between the 2 warranties? -
The only 8510p models really worth it are the smart buy base-line ones. As soon as you begin to configure, the price explodes and you might as well step up and get the 8510w.

I just picked up the 8510W at Newegg for $1,849.99

Seems slow though...
Any advantage to running Vista 64? And will a Belkin wireless n card work with it? Had to get the item as-in without draft n.

My 8510p was quite slow until I wiped the factory install and reloaded Vista clean.

When you wiped and reloaded Vista what was eliminated that from the original install? Did you just reinstall Vista or did you reinstall everything? -
HP seems to have given me (us?) an actual Vista Business DVD. When I reloaded I had NOTHING but the basics. I had to use the HP software/driver CD to put what I wanted back on. It was great

I am not too concerned about gaming performance. I leave that to my desktop. Mostly I just wanted to be able to play the latest games if I go to a lan party or something without lugging the desktop around. I know the ATI card will be more than capable of that.
I'm going to give that some serious thought though, especially considering the price.
Good luck on your paper! -
Hi guys, did anyone end up getting the HP 8510 with ATI 2600? How did the gaming side of things go? I'm thinking of getting this notebook for work before it disappears!
-
yep, and it´s a damn fine laptop. there were some problems in the beginning with some laptops concerning the hd2600, but luckily HP did fix all of the problems. i owe it now for 5 month, and i´m really happy with it.
concerning the gaming, well i only played crysis some month ago, and i could run the game mostly on high, and the performance was good. so the hd 2600 is not only a pretty rocksolid workhorse, but also quite good when it comes to demanding high end games.
i love it. -
It is indeed a very nice notebook for gaming. No problems here running any Steam games. No time for Bioshock or Crysis yet!
-
Cool, that sounds better than I expected - can't see much about that ATI card anywhere. I think I'll be getting this laptop today then!
One thing though - fan noise is important, as this is a very quiet environment at work. Are the fans pretty quiet? And during normal use (non-gaming use that is) do the fans come on at all?
-
since the last bios update the fan control seems to have become better. during normal usage like webbrowsing, doing office stuff, listening to music the fan is not spinning.
but since i´m working with a lot of demanding programs like maya, rhino, illustrator, photoshop.... and am rendering a lot i have the fan spinning regularly.
the fan is not loud, but you can notice that it is spinning. when working in a quiet environment you can barely hear it when you move more than 2 meters away from the laptop. all in all i would say it´s ok, even for a quiet place. -
Thanks for that schoko.
Went to look at it at the shop today and I was surprised by the thinness of the panel.. just a soft touch on the back makes ripples on the screen. Is this something I should be worried about? All the reviews here make a point of testing that and mentioning when it happens.. so is that really bad? Generally the screen felt pretty flimsy, but maybe it's this particular build?
[ed] this is the 'p' I saw, they don't have the 'w'. It only has *2* mouse buttons, but the 'p' model I've seen here has 3.. so is this perhaps an old version? -
my 8510p has 3 buttons for the touchpad. this is a business machine and a third mouse button is must have for most cad applications. haven´t taken a closer look to the w-model, but since it´s a workstation there should be a three button touchpad. would be odd if hp does not offer this.
about the screen, well it´s pretty thin, but i have not experienced any problems with it. I usually use it working everywhere i can, in trains, when i´m passenger in a car, on a desk, in bed....... no problemo here with the screen. -
Anyway, check the product number. If it's an RQ555AV/RQ557AV, it's a CTO model and the reseller that orders them did not configure it with the dual pointing devices option. The 8510p/w can be configured with either a two button trackpad without pointstick or 3-button trackpad with pointstick (dual pointing devices).
The LCD lid should be very durable as it is tested to withstand excessive force applied. All the ones I've tried and owned do not exhibit this rippling effect. -
But I guess that's a good deal.. depends if there are XP drivers for the X2600, coz I'm not going Vista just yet.
-
-
Second.. do you know anything about the colour bleed problem that nVidia DX10 cards have in XP? Seen it on 2 notebooks already (one HP one Clevo) and without a solution I'm forced to look only at ATI units which is a real pity. A fix for this would be a godsend. Hence I'm considering this 8510 which has an ATI card, otherwise I'd get an 8710.
There's a challenge for ya. -
Hi All, I have a 8510w now for about 3weeks. A few things
-The screen is rigid for its size. But, if I hold the laptop at the front to carry, those rubber buttons will be touching the screen. I noticed it once I started to get those rectangle impressions on the screen. So, now I carry it supported, instead of hanging on two fingers.
-I went for the HP mainly because of the HDMI, considering the t61. It is a breeze connecting to the TV
- I hate the volume control. I wish if it just changed one step at once if I press either end. Now I installed "volume tray"
- I love the three buttons. I can't think of a laptop with two buttons. Well, I work on Unigraphics/Catia and use firefox for browsing .
- I wish if I had better control on the pointer stick. If I keep my finger on it continuously for a longer period, it ignores the finer movement, the result is, the pointer moves back/goes to somewhere when I raise my finger. This is a pain if I am using the pointing stick to draw continuous lines in MSPaint or something. Anybody else face this or have a solution?
-The fan works harder if the bottom opening is covered( say I keep the system on my lap). Works much silent when I move such that the opening is not covered. Common sense?!
- There is no way to know if the ambient sensor is on or not. Pressing it doesn't give any indications.
-Sometimes , after waking up from hybernation, it just won't connect to the wireless router. Restarting is the only way.
Well, just a few thoughts...
Have fun!
Added- And that blue LED is good enough to see where you are going in the dark. I have to keep my hand on it while working. I am looking for something to stick on it. -
I also noticed that you can't really carry this notebook from the top because of the rubber bars. Once I started carrying it from the bottom the marks went away, and it does feel a little safer to carry it like this
Also you can check whether the ambient sensor is on/off by going into HP's ProtectTools manager, and looking at the system config section under bios config. But yeah, if you meant on the laptop itself... no way to tell. Well, I can tell because my brightness randomly goes up and down and drives me crazy so I turned it off, but no light indicator or anything

Let me just say this is my first notebook that was not a ThinkPad, however I have never hated or had so many issues with a notebook until I received this one. I miss my T61P!
The battery life is atrocious. The HP built-in/factory software and tools are useless. I cannot figure out why the 120GB HD requires a 10GB partition for recovery. Anyway, I run the same software with the same settings on this notebook that I ran on my ThinkPad, however the notebook chokes on large files and just doesn't have the power to keep up. So my advice stay away.

I am pretty sure that the only difference is video cards. Just to give you guys the option, the Quadro 570m drops right in and works perfectly in the 8510p. I am running one right now.
I paid somewhere around 1250 for the laptop and 200 for the video card. Performance wise, I definitely saw a gain out of the 570m over the ATI 2600. If you guys care enough, I could probably do a benchmark on a couple games/apps if you guys want, I still have the 2600 with me as well.
-
It's true that the default install is kind of bloated, but if you wipe and reinstall Windows everything runs great. Not quite sure what's wrong with your battery though--you should get 3-4 hours minimum when set to power saver/laptop mode.
I only use a few of the HP software programs but they're all fine to me...I suppose 'useless' is subjective -
I've never had the 8510p choke on any large files and I deal with 2 GB+ files on a consistent basis. I also game on it which puts the system to the test and it has worked out well. Though I agree that most of the HP software tools are pointless. All I have is the DriveGuard. You might want to consider doing a clean install if you're annoyed with the junk.
