hello everyone.
I have a quick but useful question before buying a laptop.
I have had HP in the past, and it's been nothing but the best. I was thinking of upgrading to a zx5000t model from hp.com... and one day.. (ONE DAY!!) before buying the model and configuring the specs (and getting the dough), they changed models!
I cant' get the zx5000 chasis anymore!!
I wanted to get an amd 64 with all the latest trimmings, but the models they offer now don't go a high (3.7mhz) as the options they had for zx models.
I jumped over to the Compaq side of the site and they have the RT3000 with exactly the same specs!!!
the chasis is nowhere as sleek and classy as an HP, but i want what's inside more than anything.
the question is... Has anyone notice any differences between HP and Compaq chasis durability?? i'm skeptical since compaq had a rep for mishaps, specially with flimsy keyboards and dead pixels... but has it all changed? Please send some feedback.
Thanks.
BTW. i'm thinking amd64 3.7mhz, 64mb grafx card, 1gb nonparity ram, 60gb 5400 rpm drive, 15.4 brightview screen.
lemme know if anyone has these specs and how they run. thanks.

Actually the ZV and ZX5000 series are the same chassis just different guts, i would go with the ZV6000 which is already out or the R4000 when it comes out. I like the looks and Durability of HP better then compaq.
Iam a Zx5000 owner and i have nothing but good things to say about it. []

they are pretty evenly matched, hp might be alittle bit better. my notebook gets banged around all the time and sofar its still in perfect condition. It appears to be a scratch resistent plastic. The only complaint i might have would be alittle squeaking when pressure (about 10LBS) is applied to the surface over the optical drive. This is probably a result of me slamming the drive in in anger one time, or three.

Menando,
HP & Compaq are the exact same company. They generally use pretty much ll the same parts except for the external cosmetics. Since HP bought out Compaq a few years back, they've started to use similar components in their systems (to reduce costs). The reason why they decided to keep the Compaq Presario & HP Pavilion brands as 2 different brands is because of customer loyalty. They didn't want to lose existing customers that were brand specific. This way they can keep both. As you can see with their business product lines, they've switched to the HP Compaq naming convention. Pretty much all their business products, servers, PDA's desktops & notebooks have switched to the Compaq design.
Well, with that said, either brand should provide the same level of quality. The only thing the user needs to decide on is what features they want and in what color.

thanks guys!
This is very helpful feedback.
i think i'm going to take advantage of best buy's deals this week.
i was hoping the next generation processors from amd surfaced meanwhile.. but it's going to be a while.
so, i'm deciding for the R3000z series with these specs:
OS Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition
Processor AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3700+ (2.40 GHz)
Display 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
Graphics Card 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go + 1394
Memory 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (1x1024MB)
Hard Drive 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
Networking 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
Primary Battery 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
at the HP site comes out to 1524 bucks. but best buy offers credit and 18 months to pay this week. so, i'm jumping the gun.
if anybody has this system. any comments on recommendations or upgrades to get would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again everyone!

BTW... Samwise592, the specs on the system i want are pretty much like yours.. you say you slammed your optical drive door a couple of times in rage....
was this due to poor performance of the system?? Can you comment on anoyances or faults of this system as far as speed or grafics performance?
how good can you run video-editing software and AUTOCAD software on this puppy??
i need to run these programs on it:
photoshop 7
Acrobat 6
Golive CS
Autocad
Vegas Golive 5
you think is good?
any more comments welcomed. Thanks!

You shouldn't have any problems running those programs with your system specs. I do video editing on mine and don't have any problems. I was worried that my 4200rpm HD would be too slow, but I haven't noticed any dropped frames (yet) so I guess it's okay.
