After trying for months to make my DigitalPersona to work with Firefox 3.5, I read on their website that the solution for HP users is "HP Personal" 4.1. I asked HP Support about it and here it is the solution...for now:
    HP Customer Care http://welcome.hp.com/country/uk/en/support.html

    Dear *****
Thank you for contacting HP Customer Care.
I understand that you would like to know whether Digital Persona 4.1 is released for your HP HDX X18-1103EA Premium Notebook PC which supports Firefox 3.5.
I understand your concern in this regards and assure you of my best effort in resolving this issue to your satisfaction.
*****, to use the Digital Persona Software with Firefox 3.5, please download and install the latest Digital Persona Fingerprint Reader software, version 4.0.1.3749 (SP4883 for 64-bit notebooks). The download link is give below.
Digital Persona Fingerprint Reader Software (Version: 4.0.1.3749_64 A)

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp43501-44000/sp43883.exe

But this alone will not make the Digital Persona Software compatible with Firefox 3.5. You need install a little patch in order to get the Digital Persona Software work in Firefox. The patch is attached with the email, please download the patch from the mail and read the installation instruction given below.

    Installation Instructions:

    1. Download the Digital Persona Patch.zip from the email.
    2. Change the file extension from Digital Persona Patch.zip to Digital Persona Patch.xpi.
    3. Now click on Properties and the rename the file to Digital Persona Patch.xpi and click on OK. Please refer the screenshot for the location of renaming the file.
    4. You will get a warning message as given below. Click on Yes to continue.
    Installing this patch in Firefox:
    1. Now open the Firefox web browser and drag and drop the Digital Persona Patch.xpi file.
    2. You will get a software installation confirmation window. Click on the Install Now button to initiate the installation.
    3. Restart the Firefox web browser once the installation is completed.
This should resolve the issue and you should be able to use Digital Persona with Firefox 3.5 web browser.

    Sincerely,
    Keith

This is the file they sent me. Unfortunately it is available for download only 10 times, so please somebody who knows things better than me to make it permanent.

If you can't rename the file, you need to open any folder, tools, folder options, view and then untick "hide extensions for known file types".

    Enjoy!

After switching to Win7 today, digitalpersona updated itself to 4.11 and now it works without tweaking...

Anything less is poor design. But next time start with a brief description OP. Anyway, now that I got it, I'm not really sure what to do with it?

I can confrim that the integrated Digital Persona updater has upgraded me to version 4.11 and now the Firefox add-on works in FF 3.5.

This has been working for me:

    XP Pro SP3
    Firefox: 3.5.5
    DigitalPersona Personal: 4.01.3751
    DigitalPersona Extension [for Firefox]: 1.0.1.1

I leave "add-on compatibility checking" DISABLED.

I am unable to update to 4.11 - sometimes I get a message at logon telling me there is an update, when I choose to update, I get an IE Launcher error.
