I just logged on an my screen is dim. It looks like it's in power saver mode but i didn't set it that way and can't get it to brighten. What gives?

I also have a red X next to my speaker that I can't get rid of either. Am I having a system wide malfunction or are there cornish pixies in my machine?

Okay, signed on a few minutes ago and went to control panel> power options. Somehow screen was at 50% moved it back up and everything appears back to normal. In addition, no more X by the volume control. Is anyone else having these strange setting malfunctions, or is it just me?

p.s. I'm just glad nothing's mechanically broken. Would hate to consign HP to second rate with stuff breaking after just 4 months. I'm handling this thing with kid gloves so if anything goes wrong I can be sure it wasn't because of me. That and the fact that I can't afford to replace it right now. Economy's hitting hard in my household.

Did the problems occur when you resumed from standby/hibernate? Sounds like a software/Windows glitch to me, the kind that occur after coming out of such states.

No, it was a restart from an off system. However, you may have a point about the Windows glitches: It's seem like every time I start my system I've got some kind of surprise waiting for me. Once my gadgets were scattered around the screen. Another time, my status icons had disappeared. Then there's the screen going to 50% by itself. So far, Aero (I just start it up and wait for the message that Windows experienced a problem and had to close the program) has never worked. And Windows Messenger only appears half the time.

At this point, I'm really perplexed at what I should do. Fortunately, with the exception of my security software, I don't have anything to valuable on my computer so at this point. So I'm seriously consider reinstalling Window 7 as a clean install. My only hesitation is there is no assurance that will fix the problems? But at this point, I don't see any other alternative. Still, that's a lot of time and work to go through on a hunch that it will even work.

I had this exact problem coming back from hibernate, but it was fixed by a restart
