Is it hardware specific? Does a graphics card have to be DirectX 9 compatible or can you just update DirectX

If you have a DirectX 9.0 game, you will need a graphics chip that is DirectX 9.0 compliant to utilize all the graphics features of the game. One feature I know of that is used in DirectX 9.0 is Pixel Shaders, my old ATI card doesn't have this feature, but when I try playing any DirectX 9 games, my graphics become messed up. I guess in places where they use the Pixel Shading, all I get are colored shapes.

The ATI 9000 IPG chipset is not DirectX 9.0 compliant. Therefore you will/may be able to play the game, but it's not gonna look 100%.
