So the first DirectX 10 video card is already out for desktops. How long do you guys think it will be until we see them on the hp dv6000 series (or whatever series that they have 15.4 inch displays)?

quite a while i'd imagine, the power requierments at the moment for direct x 10 cards are phenominal, we'll have to wait for lower power mainstreem cards first, before we see them in laptops
-
Heh, that sort of makes me happy and sad at the same time. On one hand, my lappy is still pretty top of the line, on the other...desktops can once again run circles around me...and I need a new desktop. Yeah, but gethin is right, don't hold out for them on laptops, unless you want to wait a while.
-
The longest I want to wait is till March-April '07. I would hate to buy a laptop and a month later, DirectX 10 cards come out.

Is there any way for them to make the older cards DX10 compatible? I mean for those of us who have cards that doesnt support it now, if games go to DX10 we will be screwed.
-
I dont think we will be screwed with dx9 cards! Im sure its going to be backwards compatible. Im guessing it will be around 2008 when exclusive dx10 games start showing up..Until then they all should be compatible with both cards...And im sure Even for the new games in 2008, they will have patches to be compatible with older dx9 hard ware...

Just my 2 cents...
These early DX10 cards are a fairly amazing leap forward in terms of GPU capability and power. Even the lower speced cards (when they finally arrive) will have features that game designers are going to love, and I think we'll be seeing a fair number of big games that can take advantage of these features in the next year (Crysis, Unreal 2007, Halo 2 PC, etc.)
That said, the first cards that featured directx 9.0c capability were the GeForce 6 series released in spring/summer of 2004. We're now coming up on Winter of 2006 and the first game to REQUIRE a DX 9.0c graphics card (Splinter Cell: Double Agent) has just now been released (and people on that game's forums are LIVID by the high requirements). So I would imagine it will be quite a while before games that require a DX10 capable card come out... late 2008 at the earliest.
Likely, you won't get the best experience on some better games coming out without a DX10 capable chip, but I wouldn't worry about being able to run games for awhile. -
Notebook chips from Nvidia should be announced in Feb. 2007, with availability in systems in March or April. Sorry, I don't have the link handy for that info, but google should have it.
All graphics cards with Vista XDDM or WDDM drivers are technically DX10 compatible. These new cards simply have ALL of the features that DX10 offers (Shader Model 4.0, AA + HDR, etc.) Even games that require DX10 and Vista to run won't necessarily require those new features be present. -
thanks.....do you think its possible that hp will release or announce a new 15.4-inch notebook series by then (April...May)?
-
It's hard to say. The 6000 series is still very new. But I would definitely think that HP would be upgrading the available graphics card options in that time frame to include the new dx10 chips even if they don't replace the entire notebook series.
DirectX 10 Cards on dv6000 (or equivalent)
