Is there a way to disable/enable/configure the Quick Play Media Button next to the Volume Mute and Volume Slider located at the upper panel of the keyboard? I have a Compaq Presario V3617tu.
When accidentally touched, it powers on the notebook and I find this quite annoying.
Thank you very much.

I was hoping for the same thing. It's pretty damn annoying when I accidently brush up against it. Anyone? Sorry if I'm hijacking. Hopefully there's a solution. It's not in the BIOS that's for sure. Maybe we could request HP to put it in the next BIOS update.

Try kill the startup QLB.exe which controls these buttons. I have the quicktouch software (newer version of quicklaunch) and I hated that when gaming and changing volume a onscreen volume thing came up, so i killed the startup for that, and I just left the QLB one because I find them quite handy
-
Yes, I tried killing QLB at startup using a startup manager and verifed it via task manager that it wasn't running but it was not effective. As a last resort, I uninstalled QLB but still, to no avail.

From reading the posts here about these buttons. It appears to be a BIOS thing. It would be nice if HP could add a switch inside the BIOS to turn these buttons on and off. I know in some models the updated BIOS now lets you turn off the sounds but the buttons are still active.
The other interesting thing I read was that the buttons will eventually stop working though some strange sequence with hibernation mode. This has not happend to me yet after 3 weeks. So maybe HP fixed that bug in BIOS Version F.13. -
nope, you just have to uninstall QuickPlay. I tried before, uninstalled QuickPlay and no matter which button I pushed (QuickPlay or DVD icon), it didn't power up the system.

How did you do that TomTom2007? I did a clean install of Vista on my dv6233se without installing QuickPlay, but it still powers up when I click the QuickPlay or DVD button. Weird. Is it only in newer models? Guess I have to wait for my dv6700t this week to figure it out.
-
No, I haven't installed the Quick Play software which I know is different from the Quick Launch Buttons program.

Mine is a relatively new model. I wonder if this is really a bios thing. How could it run without any driver? I hope someone could provide us a real solution soon, cause I keep closing/opening my notebook just to keep it safe from accidentally being fired up. -
that I'm not sure, I tested it on my dv6000t, uninstalled everything (anything that is HP crapware related), then went ahead delete their registries.

I said it's a Bios thing becuase the "Q" button is still alive after the computer is shutoff. Something still has it running and waiting for input. The option to turn off the sounds for these things is located in my F.13 Bios In my case I love this feature. Becuase, I'm not using the PC as a laptop. I'm using the Dragon as a HTPC with the remote. I can just walk by and swipe my finger over the Q button. Talk about being lazy hah. I'm just guessing but I think if you uninstall Quickplay and you brush the 'Q" button the PC will still start up and go to the sign in screen or desktop. But the "Q" button is still active.
PS I'm thinking about removing QP and adding SlingPlayer to the Startup Files.
This way when we press "Q" slingplayer will start and connect to the network with the swipe of a single key. It would be cool if the finger print reader was active instead of the "Q" . -
Yes, I could turn off the popping sounds but not the Q thingy. There should be an option to turn this on or off. If its any consolation, at least my power button won't be subjected to wear and tear cause I'll just use the Q button to power on the lappy.

Ok, We uninstalled QP and QL software and drivers along with anything in the reg. Boy! was that a pain to do. Must be a better way then search and destroy. Made sure QL.EXE was gone
The buttons stopped working froms the windows desktop on my Dragon
BUT!!!. No matter what button I swipe my finger over. This will still turn on the computer. An interesting thing is. The DVD drive button will turn on the computer. But the disk drive no longer opens by swiping the button.
So these buttons must run on both a combination of hardware and software.
Maybe when you swipe your finger across the buttons it changes a voltage from low to high like when you press in the on/off button.
So once again. something is keeping these blue buttons hot while the computer is off. I wonder if there is a secret key combination or sequence to deactivate these buttons.
Note HP does not want you to delete Quick play. HPIT told me that any QP updates may also include new drivers. If you remove QP you may not get the latest hardware drivers.
Right now it doesn't matter to us since we created both Factory restore and Windows restore disks. We are just playing and trying to learn everything about our new toy before we put it to work as our HTPC.
By-the-way my 3DMark2006 with the basic package ended up being 4436. Yuck Guess you can't have everything. But it seems fast enough to play HDVD movies at 1920 x 1080 just fine. (No Hickups)
