I am returning to the laptop world after a bit of an absence and so I have what I suspect is a naive question. I have a dv2500t on it's way and I know that Vista is really bloaty so I have been thinking about adding more memory. It is arriving with 2GB but I have thought about taking out 1 stick and replacing it with a 2gb stick for 3gb total. Is this a good idea, or not? I was reading a little about the dual channel thing and I was afraid with two dis-similar sticks that it would not give me the performance increase to justify it.

    3 Gb > 2 Gb as 3 > 2, except in bizarro world.

Shouldn't be a problem. The difference between single- and dualchannel mode is generally only 5% performance or so. On the other hand, Vista is a lot happier with 3GB RAM than with 2, so you should easily make up for that again.

Right, I think I understand. It's just simply more is better. Is it gonna be worth the $100 to do it without the dual channel thing?

Honestly bro, save that $100 bucks, and just do a fresh, clean install of your Vista and you'll be a happy camper.

Vista has excellent memory management, and you'll be doing FINE with just 2gb's.

Save your money for when 64-bit is fully supported and then upgrade to 4GB.

You can get a 2gig chip for a lot less than $100 check around (newegg maybe)
Also dual channel still works with a 1gig + 2gig setup it just works with the first 2 gigs only and 3gig seems to be the sweet spot with Vista 32 bit on the intel santarosa chipset

You guys are great, thanks! I was planning to do the clean anytime upgrade thing and then tweak Vista with some ofteh guides I've seen here. I have just been on the fence about more memory.
